I was divided between this location and Sea Shore. I chose this location thinking the service would stand out. I would like to think the sub par service was circumstantial, but as a patron—what my party and I experienced last night was unacceptable. Came here on a Friday night at 8pm for a birthday dinner, party of 6. We requested to sit in the outdoor seating area. The food was decent but the service was EXTREMELY disappointing. About 10 minutes after being seated, one of the employees (I am assuming they were a busser) approached our table and asked if they could remove one of the chairs that was vacant at our table. We informed them that the last member of the party would be arriving shortly, to which they responded “well, this section closes at 9PM.” I very politely informed them that the last member of our party would be arriving within 10-15 minutes and that we would order appetizers in the meantime. They just walked away. Side-note, the interaction with this previously mentioned employee went down in Spanish. I didn’t take offense to this AT ALL, if anything I appreciated the fact that we were identified as Latinos and I was under the impression that we were being “treated like family”, as some of the reviews here said we would be. I was also mindful of the fact that the 9 o’clock hour was approaching, so I was understating of the fact that staff may have been eager to wrap it up in the outdoor seating area. The bussers gesture was a bit brute and slightly irritating but my party and I were out celebrating someone’s birthday—we wanted to have a good time as a family and so, we kinda let it go. It was truly a non-issue. However, as the night went on, I began to question this employee’s gesture when I noticed guests were being accommodated way past 9PM—even after we we’re finishing up with our dinner.

Anyway, what really tarnished our experience was our server. They alone wouldn’t even get one star for their service. They utterly neglected our table. From the moment the server approached our table, I recall sensing they would be inattentive and aloof, but I didn’t want to be led by my prejudgments. I should have listened to my gut. I recall our server following up with the table next to us frequently and at one point even taking shots with them; meanwhile, the only time our server was visible to us was when we ordered appetizers, drinks, and meals. Since the server would never follow up, we flagged the server down twice: once to top off drinks and a second time to ask for extra garlic bread. On both instances before I was even done talking, the server was already walking away and from a distance would say “okay”. No manager walking around to inquire about the service being provided, no dessert menu or after dinner options were offered.

If management sees this, please note I was very particular in wording this review and I was very careful not to include any identifiers that would incriminate any one particular person. My goal in leaving this review is to share my experience objectively. I could have complained when I was in the establishment, but times are hard and I would never want to be the person to put someone’s job on the line over an experience that may have been circumstantial. There is a way for management to make staff aware of their biases—it’s called sensitivity training. Please remind your staff that their actions are a reflection of your entire team and your establishment.

On a personal note, I don’t want to think that the lack of integrity and respect my family and I endured had to do with the fact that we were Latino— being that most of the waiting staff here is Latino—but I hope this review sheds light on this behavior and perhaps be a voice for those who have had a similar experience. No review I read about this establishment could have prepared my family and I for the disrespect and lack of integrity we experienced last night. The service delivered by our busser-server combo was enough to make me think that it was more about us than it was about them—but I know better. On the ride home my family and I talked about our experience and we were all universally disappointed with the service. I observed the service the tables surrounding us were receiving and let’s just say there were moments where I just wished the person taking care of them was taking care of us. They seemed to be having the full City Island experience, with the signature lobster bibs and full service.

Perhaps our experience would have been different with another server. I still can’t come to terms with the service we received. I just don’t understand why our experience was so mediocre compared to the tables surrounding us. Which leads me to believe that there’s a type of clientele certain staff members are willing to be more or less attentive to based on their own biases. Perhaps our server would have deemed us to be more worthy of his time and attention had he had a different perception of us, perhaps he didn’t think providing service to us would be fruitful—but that’s getting personal.
