There are several good fish and chip restaurants in southeastern Connecticut but only one that is consistently high quality delicious. Golden Pizza is just across the Preston town line from Gales Ferry Ledyard on Route 12. We have done eat-in and take out from here for more than 40 years. The standard is high, the owner pleasant and ever courteous, the waitstaff efficient and cheerful. Fish and chips is our favorite meal: three to four sizable sweet fillets of fresh and tender fish in a very light crumb batter, enough to make a delicate, non-greasy coating, with crisp and succulent fries heaped beside. Lemon wedge, coleslaw or house salad (green pepper, fresh onion, chunked iceberg lettuce, and tomato with dressing of choice (mine is Ken's blue cheese), and tartar sauce complete the meal. Actually when we take out, one portion makes a substantial two meals and is as delicious carefully reheated in the convection oven next day. Of course, if one desires sweet somethings, there are cheesecake, cream pie, and baklava variously offered. Other enjoyed meals I like are the stuffed peppers -- two with a vegetarian filling that is yummy; the grinders (subs, Italian sandwich), I first had 45 years ago, regular Italian, meatball, sausage, each so delicious with their yeasty rolls fresh, not crunchy or fall-apart soft, with a good bite to them. Before I finish and I've hardly begun naming all the super possibilities, the pizzas of course are GREAT! Phil's Special is a favorite in our house with its tasty and piquant combination. There are pizzas made with fresh veggies, white and red pizzas, and the ordinary ones are extraordinarily delicious too, and they all have the crisp crust without being overly "bready" ... Definitely, we ENJOY Golden Pizza Restaurant and hope you will have a chance to sample the many goodies there too. Thank you Phil and everyone who works with you.
