This is the best lunch spot I have been to in DC. The food is fresh and tasty. The soups are to die for. I never go anywhere else since I discovered this place. The owner is the nicest guy, he always says hi to me by name and has a smile on his face.Other restaurant owners in DC are NOT this nice. In fact, I am frequently appalled at how I am treated in other establishments. If you like personal attention, small mom and pop shops, and great food, then go here. Plus they have Vernor's - which is an added plus, it's ginger ale brewed in MI (I'm from MI).

I just started going to City Place Cafe and I couldn't be happier. The owner/proprietor is helpful and cheerful, pointing me in the right direction when I have questions. Both breakfast and lunch are great. Lots of choices and everything I have had so far is GREAT! I even load up on sandwiches for the weekend when I need to feed my husband quick meals!

The person who wrote the last review was way off about the owner's personality, I've been a loyal customer of City place for 4 years now and he has always treated me with the upmost respect. Yes, lunch is chaotic and it may explain his attitude at times but it's understandable when you see the volume they are trying to do in such a small space. I'll always be a fan of City Place Cafe...the food is delicious and the service is far better than anywhere else.

Food: breakfast is reliable but not remarkable. Lunch sandwiches are better than average.
Service: Breakfast -- fast but rude; Lunch service: chaotic.
Comments:
It's been a nice place to stop for a quick breakfast (lunch is crowded), and it normally is a great place to linger since there are a few tables inside. But the owner/operator is kind of rude. In fact, over the years I've been going there he's gotten worse. He seems to want to keep track of his customers by name, so he values their business, but then he loses his temper and barks at them if they forget his quirky ordering system. He doesn't go by the "customer's always right" rule. I've seen him berate and condescend to tourists and first-timers. If I were a tourist I wouldn't go in there. He's got a short fuse. Since the proprieter has gotten more rude over time, it's starting to cancel out the advantage of the space to linger... I might have to find a new breakfast joint.

City Place Cafe is a gem of a deli. Forget the other deli's in town, you can't top this place. All the food is so fresh and everything is made to order. This is not typical deli food.......lots of items have a Meditterranean flavor. My favorites are the wraps, soups and salad bar. The service is top notch and the waits fairly quick. I definitely recommend this place to all.

You can see I'm spoiled by Jo-Ed and Zack's care and menu. The food is tops and the counter staff led by Akela is totally awesome. The SOUPS are to die for. Jo-Ed is always on top of the daily NEWS! Thanks Jo-Ed. John (Hillary's friend)

Food, service, atmosphere are absolutely the best value in the area. Try the soups because they are prepared from scratch daily and the selection is like no other. The people who own and operate this cafe are friendly, intelligent, knowledgeable, creative, and know food. All sandwiches, salads, and breakfast foods (everything) they serve is prepared to order. Thanks for the wonderful care!

Sandwiches are the best in the city. Try the Tuscano or Southwest Chicken wrap, unreal.
