On July 4th, my husband, my stepson from Rhode Island and I wanted to find somewhere on the water within 1/2 hour of Milford for lunch. Our first choice restaurant was closed so we decided to try Sambos. We liked the neighborhood bar/restaurant feel of the place and it's obvious from first glance that it's best suited for those who want steamed crabs. Nothing wrong with that but of the 3 of us, I was the only one that wanted to pick some. The other two ordered platters. One ordered the crab cakes and the other ordered soft shells. I pointed out the menu price to make sure they realized these platters were $50 each. Pretty steep in my opinion but I thought maybe it would be worth it. For what came out of the kitchen, there was complete disappointment. The crab cakes were small and fried to a dark brown. Note that the choice of broiled or baked was not offered. The soft shells were OK looking and I was told they were OK tasting but not worth the price. The sides included a small paper cup of cole slow and french fries,.,,lots and lots of french fries. I realize crabmeat is expensive these days but there was absolutely no justification for the cost of these meals. This is not a resort town or fine dining restaurant. I'll pay $50 for a 1 lb tub of lump backfin and make 4 jumbo, no filler crab cakes at home. Maybe the cost of french fries is way up? And by the way, my 1/2 dozen #2 crabs were what I expected and I enjoyed picking them every though they were pretty much "air crabs" and not very well seasoned but that's another story. We will not be going back to Sambos. Clearly it caters to locals and "don't know any better" out-of- towners but for someone raised around the Chesapeake, I recommend you just stick to the steamed crabs. Finally, I will say our waitress was very friendly and prompt although she had lots of tables to serve.

We’ve been to Sambos many times and always enjoyed the food and the people who work there.

I love Sambo's. It has an amazing view of the river and good food and drinks. A perfect place to catch up with friends.

We have been going to Sambos since we stumbled upon it at least ten years ago!! I cannot say one bad thing except I live in Bethany and it is a shame I have to drive all the way to Dover for crabs but we do and it is worth it!!! I took my daughter now she is hooked every time I take some one they go again with someone else and so on... but it is great!

My husband & I try to get to Sambo's @ least 3 or 4 times during the summer. It takes us nearly 3 hrs to get there but it's well worth it. We wouldn't eat crab cakes anywhere else & the steamed crabs are excellent. The staff has always been courteous & check back with us frequently during our meal to make sure we have everything we need. We've been to many crab restaurants but Sambo's is by far the best!

Being from the Boston area, I am use to good seafood and generous portions. Sambo's food was good, but not enough of it for the price. The sides come in ketchup cups and I counted 18 fries on my plate with 3 small pieces of rock fish. My wife's crab cake sandwich didn't even come with potato chips. I'm going back to Shucker's when we go to Dover.

Was really disappointed! Didn't have reservations but was seated anyway. Crabs were just off the boat, big, juicy and seasoned perfectly.Beer was cold staff was not. Gone back 5 times. waiting for number 6.

Went to Sambo during race weekend a year ago.I live on the shore of jersey, and when I took 6 of my buddys from here they were VERY pleased of the crabBALLS and crabs price when you go out for a good time and food that dose not matter!!!! Can't wait to get back this year!!!!!

Judging from the comments, I would say the nay-sayers are the ones who were rude and unfriendly. The owner probably let you know it and now your wittle feelings are hurt. I used to live near the place and went there ALL the time! Never, EVER treated with anything other than respect! Food is AWESOME, too!

Definately BEST crabs. My husband and I live in Baltiimore and Sambos crabs are the best!!great view and service. Also love the shrimp jammers!!

Best crabs around! The owner is actually the Mayor, and does not in fact hate the locals. And people shouldn't gossip on web reviews, it's low class.

It is pricey but this isn't a buffet. Despite it's humble appearances, being a water-front restaurant in the small town of Leipsic, it's a higher class joint with higher class food: fresh crabs from Delaware or Maryland, depending on what time of the season you go, but seasoned perfectly.

Food is 10/10. Occasionally they get a bad review from a first timer who showed up expecting it to be a cheap mom and pop restaurant that should graciously accept their patronage, but the fact they could care less about such reviews tells the tale. The place is packed every night, and they don't even need to advertise to keep the crowds coming back.

THE BEST CRAB CAKES EVER...and I've eaten a ton of crab cakes. Now I never order them anywhere except Sambo's because I know I'll be disappointed by comparison. Jumbo lump---always!

review_stars 05/21/2010 - P B
Decent at best. Tried the steamed clams, crabcake, crab, fish filet, and boiled shrimp....the best was the hush puppies. Service was not outstanding but was friendly. The price was kind of ridiculous but not overwhelming. Would go again...but not right away

review_stars 04/30/2010 - brian medley
the price is outrageous!! my wife and i spent $90.00 and left not only hungry, but insulted by the owners wife! the food is average at best. the owner and his wife hate the towns locals, and jack up prices every year beyond the norm. if Mr. Sambo were alive he'd chase his own son out of town!!!! to top it off, the place is nasty! save your money, your time, and your grief!

I order crab cakes or shrimp whenever we go out. I have dined up and down the east coast and without a doubt this is the absolute best!!! The staff is great. My only complaint is the noise, but that's what you get when people are enjoying themselves with great food!! You can spend more but you can't get better food or service!

review_stars 08/18/2009 - Holly
Don't judge this restaurant by its cover! They sell the best crab cakes and soup I've ever had. Crabs are as fresh as they come, right off the boat. Plan to eat here when the tide is high and the view is beautiful.

Little hole in the wall kinda place...What a HUGE surprise!! Wow!! The seafood was great!! I had the crabs..($35/doz) is about the going rate, but these were worth it...My girl had the clams and shrimp and they were very good. Had some live music in the place on a Monday evening. He did very well. The staff was friendly. I will be back again soon......I think I found a great summertime seafood spot!!

Amazing crab cakes and steamed shrimp! The prices are a little high so we won't be able to do it often but we will definitely visit for a special treat. We haven't tried the crabs as we are new at this but willing to give it a shot next visit. Very friendly staff and fantastic nautical view.

Great fun, best crab cakes.

review_stars 06/22/2009 - ryukyu
Crabs were sweet and tasty. Bought half dozen, got 7. Don't know if it's like that all the time, but it made me happy. Wife had crabcakes and she said they were one of the best she ever had. A little disappointed with the fries and the fact that they close on Sundays. All in all, I'll be back again and again.

Great food, service, and wait staff. Loved the atmosphere and can't wait until they open again this year!

review_stars 01/20/2009 - Best Broiled crabcakes anywhere
Though Sambo's may be just a bit expensive, they make the best broiled crabcakes anywhere.
Their waterfront/fishing port location adds to the ambiance.
I've moved away to Baltimore from the Dover area, and they still stand as the best crabcakes. I always stop in for a crabcake sandwich when i'm in town. They serve a very light roll with the crabcake, which accentuates the flavor of the crabcake.
I absolutely love the place. One must remember that crabs size and fullness is generally uncontrollable, so at ti mes the crabs may be small or light. But the crabcakes never disappoint.

Terrible crab cakes. Light crabs. Bad service. Way over priced.

Discovered Sambo's during my last month stationed at Dover AFB in 1972. Have returned many times. Best steamed crab and shrimp. The
atmosphere, owners and waitresses make it a great place to have a fun time.

Can't wait to go back again !
A rating of 10 is not high enough !!!
