Missing them.
05/03/2011 - Dawn
We had KJ's kitchen for linner on Sunday. I ordered the ribs, my roommate had the meatloaf. I ordered one of all the sides in order to try everything. The only thing we didn't get was the Yam's, they were out. I also ordered a piece of pie for dessert.
Here is a breakdown:
Ribs - The ribs were cooked perfectly, they were fall off the bone tender and juicy. However, they spoiled it by covering them in a sweet'ish red bbq sauce that really just tasted like it was watered down. So good ribs, but not great.
Meatloaf - The meatloaf had great flavor, but the consistency left something to be desired, it didn't hold together well and reminded me of canned dog food.
Sides - To begin with I ordered rice and gravy with my meal and it was missing so I have no review for that.
Mashed Pots w/gravy - The mashed pots were pretty good, they had a great homemade texture and good flavor all by themselves, the gravy was run of the mill brown gravy, nothing spectacular on its own.
Collard Greens - The collard greens had an okay, if somewhat bitter flavor. I cook mine for most of a day and flavor them with a ham bone or something similar. These had no pork flavor at all, and were not cleaned very well as there were too many stem pieces.
Cabbage - The cabbage was "okay" just okay because it had very little in the way of flavor added to it, although it was not horrible.
Green Beans - The green beans, in my opinion, were one of the highlights of the whole meal. They had a great flavor, chopped onions, and altogether just YUM!
Mac-n-Cheese - The mac looked yummy, it was baked and had a nice crust on it. It could have been a little cheesier, but that is my personal opinion.
Black-Eyed-Peas - MY personal favorite. They were a tad soupy, and that would have been made up by my missing rice, but outside of that the flavor and consistency were great.
Dessert - Sweet Potato Pie - the pie was too "spicy" it tasted like it had a tad too much nutmeg (I guess) in it.
All in all it wasn't bad (not for $22), the portions were decent sized. They do not accept credit cards though so to me it wasn't really worth the trip to the ATM and back. I'll eat there again, but only if I already have cash on me.
