We were at Peerless with a large group of couples for Valentine's Day. To say we were disappointed, would be an understatement. As soon as we were seated, we were told they were out of prime rib and had been since 7 pm. Valentine's Day and a holiday weekend as well. Poor planning. They were out of several appetizers also. Only one of our tables received appetizers on time. After finishing our salads, we asked our server to cancel the apps. However, they were coming out and so were our entrees. On a positive note, we weren't charged for them. I ordered a 14 oz. medium rare ribeye with bleu cheese butter. It was well done. It was a half inch thick. I'm not exaggerating. It had to be a much smaller cut. I've had better ribeye at Waffle House. I am almost positive the "bleu cheese butter" was dressing. Didn't even bother with dessert. Sadly, the complimentary saltines were the best part of the meal. Not worth the money at ALL. In my opinion, one star is too much.

We have never had a bad meal at Peerless. It is our favorite restaurant as the food is always fresh and delicious. We just attended a large dinner party there and as always, the food was just wonderful and the desserts were to die for. I know if you are not happy with anything, just let your server know and we are sure that things will be taken care of. It is our pleasure to take friends and family there. We feel lucky that we have this restaurant in Johnson city. Best scallops anywhere!

We were given a $100 gift certificate for the locally famous Peerless and were extremely excited to eat there (never having been able to afford the place on our own since it's absurdly expensive). But from the moment we walked through the door everything was awful.

The staff was rude. The bartenders started yelling across the restaurant at some guests, we were never sure why- my husband asked them why they couldn't approach the customers in person instead of yelling. Then the hostess skipped us on the list (which happens sometimes, no big deal), but she lied and just said "oh you're next." When she finally did seat us, she didn't speak a word to us, didn't look at us, and merely flung the menus on our table and walked off; I get friendlier service from the teens at the Taco Bell drive thru. As we were waiting on our meal, we were people watching and our wonderful hostess showed her true colors once again when she got caught behind an elderly gentleman slowing making his way down the aisle... she started dancing and making faces behind his back before she wedged herself sideways to get around him. Our server was ok, but it wasn't until I got home that I realized he never brought my change to me from my large cash tip.

Most importantly, however, the food was really, really bland. My husband got the 7 & 7 (7oz steak & 7oz lobster tail... $50 and served with one side item) & I got a 5oz filet mignon. My husband said his steamed lobster was great, but we both agreed the steak had no flavor whatsoever. They must not put any kind of seasoning on them. My husband got the salmon dip appetizer, and he says it was good but not much better than the pre-made dip he gets at Food Lion. We both got dessert- I had the Chocolate Mousse Cake (which was good, but not fantastic) and my husband got the chocolate pound cake served with ice cream and syrup- he said the cake was really dry, but it tasted ok. Salads don't come with the meal, so we shared one and got the Creamy Garlic dressing (which is like a bland version of Caesar). I can forgive bad service when the food is worth it, but this place has zero redeeming qualities.

Sometimes (like Hard Rock Cafe or the Rainforest Cafe) you get so-so food but you're mostly paying for the atmosphere. Well, I can't give any props for the atmosphere. The hardwood floors made the din of hundreds of voices reverberate throughout the entire restaurant (which I expect from raucous places like Logan's where there's country music blaring and peanuts on the floor, but not a high-brow place like this). Also, the wall of our booth was splattered with old food and funk in general.

And on a really nitpicky note- I had to roll my eyes at the complimentary dish of plain saltene crackers served with a blob of butter. To me that's what you eat when you're starving & scrounging around abandoned cabinets after the Apocalypse.

My wife and I wanted to celebrate our 36th anniversary at a new and nice restaurant. Unfortunately, we chose the Peerless, which was recommended by someone we met in Connecticut that use to eat there many years ago before retiring. I won't go into the details as I've read the two reviews above and they fully cover our experience. Next time I will read the reviews first and then decide. Bon appetite, but not at the Peerless.

Young, poorly trained wait staff with no supervision, mostly trying to make time with one another, noisy and self absorbed. Came early (5:30 PM) on a Tuesday, wife's birthday. Food served at near room temperature. Waitress indifferent when it was pointed out, actually told us that the heat lamp had been turned down but the problem was fixed now. Too bad about our dinner. This is an expensive place to eat and the second time in a row this has happened.
Discussed this with hostess. She too expressed her regrets and bid us farewell.
Farewell indeed.
This is not a hit, just the hard truth, go to a diner before you go to Peerless. If you do decide to go anyway, expect to pay $100 for two and come away angry. AND... remember, I warned you.

New to JC we heard that the Peerless used to be the place to go for great steaks. Well, clearly USED to be is the key word. Our waitress was sweet and tried her best to handle all the problems we experienced but there is no way a server can control what they are given to serve. The restaurant atmosphere seemed nice and with the dimmed lighting it is hard to give a valid comment on cleanliness. But to warn you about the food is very easy.
In an establishment in which you can pay $30+- per person for a meal you are given stale saltine crackers to eat while your food is prepared. Prices do not include even the simplest side salad, & with your entree you get EITHER a potatoes OR whatever vegetable they are offering. This explains why nothing is noted on the single page, limited menu for what your entree comes with.
Our appetizer contained crabmeat which was rancid and inedible and the balance of it was lukewarm at best and tasteless. Our baked potatoes were cool and mostly uncooked. We asked for sides of butter and sour cream but servers are NOT ALLOWED to give you any toppings to put on your potatoes - they have to put them on for you. We ordered the prime rib which should be pink, tender and in its own 'au jus'. It was grey and stuck dryly to the plate. It gave off an odor and had a spoiled taste. Even the garnish on the plates was spoiled and edged with brown slime. The owner came over and when we explained the problems he proceeded to reach onto the plate, picked up the whole piece of meat and squished it between his fingers, telling us it was "out of this world". I was truly horrified. He then walked away without saying another word.
We have discussed our experience since and have heard more horror stories from those who used to be loyal customers years ago but say they will never return. These included the same owner addressing other customer complaints in a similarly horrifying fashion. One said he had extreme amounts of gristle he had to cut out of his steak and when the owner came over, he ate the gristle off of the customer’s plate and said it was fine! In another case we were told there had been an 'unidentifiable object' in the steak and when the owner looked at it and still could not identify it he put it in his mouth!!
If I had not experienced what I had myself I would probably have doubted these accounts or thought they had in the very least been a bit embellished, but I think you should know. I wish we had been forewarned and given the chance to make another choice. We work very hard for our money as I'm sure do you and just wanted a special night out. When you go to a "Fine Dining" restaurant you should both expect and receive a Fine Dining experience with fresh, safe food. In addition to food that was not only bad, but potentially unsafe, the actions of the owner were not only horrifying, they were inexcusable and unconscionable. Make your own decisions, but please make informed ones.
