It’s 5:45 p.m. on a beautiful Saturday afternoon and my daughter and I stop into WhackBurger, a place both of us have wanted to try for a while. The reviews seemed favorable for the food, not so favorable for the service. We walk in with open minds………and…….it’s……..empty. It is completely devoid of life except for the two gentlemen in the back of the kitchen. Well, wait time should be minimal. They don’t open until 5:00 p.m. for the dinner set on Saturday. We scan the menu: You have a choice of meat, burger selections (they are all uniquely named), and one side. $9.99 for whatever combination you come up with, drinks are extra. Today, however, they have an advertised special. The special is a traditional cheeseburger with fries, and a drink, for $8.99. Not a bad deal considering the normal price would be approaching twelve bucks.
We opt for something right off of the menu. I have the BBQ Jalapeno Burger with a salad as my side. My daughter chooses the Forget About It Burger with the fresh fruit as a side. We get our drinks from the self-serve machine, a selection of Coke Products, and have a seat. The interior is “Comic Book-esque”. I say that partly because there is a large comic book graphic painted on one wall, and the back wall is covered in large comic book page depictions. Interesting, simple, and screaming “They had a sale on primary colors at the paint store”. The seating area is clean, the furnishings are new, and peering towards the kitchen, I see that it, too, appears to be clean. As we wait, business starts to pick up. It appears that most of the orders tonight are to go, as only one of perhaps six orders besides ours is eaten here.
If you come here, I would suggest you bring a book, a smartphone, a friend to talk to, or at least delight in watching the world go by, as waiting seems to be part of the experience. With no other orders, it took almost twenty minutes to get 2 burgers, a cup of fruit and a salad. The burgers are big, fresh, and flavorful. One distinction here is that it appears they are cooked on a char broiler, which happens to be my favorite form of burger preparation. The meat itself is well seasoned, well cooked (even when a little overcooked), and tasty. The charbroiled taste really comes through. My only comment here is that the meat seems overworked. You know, that compressed, dense feel you get as compared to a looser packed, more crumbly mouth feel. The mustard barbecue sauce is excellent. It is sweet, with a little smokiness to it, as if it too, had been prepared on the char broiler. In addition, the Swiss and Grilled Onions on the burger are good. My salad is nice, not just iceberg lettuce, but spinach, cucumber, black olives and sunflower seeds. It has fresh feta cheese, and plenty of Blue Cheese dressing was provided on the side. A taste of the Forget About It Burger proved to be nice, too. The meat actually tasted as though it was prepared with Italian seasoning. Kind of like a “Burger Meatball”. The fruit cup was OK, a reasonable portion, but with pineapple that seemed like it was getting close to “turning”. It had that “tang” to it, that made it seem so. The buns were pretty traditional, but were soft, warm and nicely grilled.
Both burgers were a little “fall apart” messy; they are not the totally self-contained type. Not like a Big Mac or Quarter Pounder from McDonald’s. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. My daughter was using a fork on her burger well before the end of the meal. This is obviously anticipated, as extra napkins came out with the burgers.
So now comes the question….would I eat here again? It’s not that I wouldn’t eat here if I was in the area, but I don’t think I would come to the area just to eat here. For a $10.00 burger, I need to be “wowed”. I wasn’t. The wait was long; I would hate to see how long it takes on a busy day – the burger was dense – just not “Wow material”. Sorry, just “Whack” enough to be good, but not to be great.
