Restaurant Description

As soon as you step into Smitty's Grill, a wave of nostalgic memories splashes over you, washing away your daily cares and concerns. A friendly, clubby restaurant, this is a place that celebrates the all-American comfort cuisine of our past, its menu a veritable hit parade of old-fashioned favorites. Archive photos reflecting a more innocent era reinforce the spirit of this endearing establishment, a venture of acclaimed restaurateurs Bob and Gregg Smith. Smitty's Grill takes mom's cooking and puts a polished professional spin on it...but you can still taste the love. Smitty's Grill is a bustling restaurant with wood-clad walls virtually covered with the spirit of America and a menu filled with familiar culinary traditions from the Heartland. As enthusiastic guests tuck into comfort foods such as barbecued ribs and chicken pot pie, the likes of Joe DiMaggio, Liz Taylor and Ike peer over their shoulders from vintage black-and-white photos. Smitty's Grill is the kind of place in which a classic martini or frosty glass of draft beer seem to fit the mood, although an impressive wine list is offered, too. The sleek, modern facade of Smitty's hides the clubby grill atmosphere discovered upon entering the eminently inviting establishment. While elegant touches abound—tables dressed with white linen, fine china and stemware—the place has a casual, unpretentious feel to it, warmed with rich wood and those familiar icons of American sports, politics and entertainment that line the walls. In an unpredictable, fast-paced world, Smitty's Grill takes us back to our familiar, comforting roots. In the rear, the bustling energy of the dining room gives way to a serene patio on which time seems to stand still. Appetizers feature Baltimore-style crab cakes, a basket of addictive popcorn shrimp, classic shrimp cocktail, and cheese bread that you'll want to double up on. Familiar salads (e.g. Cobb, Caesar, Dungeness crab Louis) are other terrific ways to begin at Smitty's, before moving on to great steaks like filet mignon, New York, rib-eye, or roasted prime rib. Unlike at those fancy steakhouses, you won't be needing bearnaise or cognac-cream sauces—Smitty's Grill's own brand of home-style steak sauce is the preferred condiment. Mom's chicken pot pie never approached the soulful rendition served here, and Marion's famous meatloaf is one you'll never forget. Double-cut pork chop, garlic- and herb-roasted chicken, and braised short ribs are other Smitty's Grill specialties that warm the heart, along with a rack of "rattlesnake" barbecued baby back ribs. The side dishes are a collection of American classics: velvety creamed corn, onion rings, fries, and addictive homemade potato chips. And for dessert, traditional favorites include lemon meringue pie, apple-walnut bread pudding, New York cheesecake, and a massive hot fudge sundae made with legendary Fosselman's ice cream. The polished wood bar dispenses superb classic cocktails—Screwdriver, Lemon Drop, Classic Old Fashioned, or The Grill Martini—made from the finest spirits and freshly-squeezed juices. An assortment of beers is offered as well, and the predominantly California wine list contains nearly 100 reasonably priced labels that pair exceptionally well with the hearty fare from Smitty's kitchen. Large, celebrated producers like Merryvale, Jordan and Silver Oak share the roster with the latest boutique wineries discovered by the wine-savvy staff. Its clubby good looks, unpretentious attitude and nostalgic all-American menu make Smitty's Grill one of the most popular restaurants in the Pasadena area, ideal for families but equally appealing for couples. At lunch, Smitty's draws a loyal clientele of businesspersons and shoppers from the surrounding South Lake Avenue commercial district. The restaurant has been widely acclaimed by local and national critics in such publications as Pasadena Weekly, the Los Angeles Times, and Fodor's travel publications. Smitty's Grill is a venture of brothers Bob and Gregg Smith, innovative restaurateurs who have shaped dining trends in Pasadena for over two decades. Other venues operated by Smith Brothers Restaurant Corporation include Parkway Grill and Arroyo Chop House in Pasadena, Vibrato Grill, Jazz...Etc. in Bel-Air, and their chain of fun, casual Crocodile Cafes.
