The food was just ok and the service was worse. I did like the decor.

I have been here several times with the staff at my office. I am also 100% Portuguese. Only two of the folks with me thought their steak tips were "too dry" The wait at the bar seemed fairly long last time we ate there so this time we tried the dining room. The waitress who maybe was the owner or owners wife, was very nagging. She seemed as though she didn't want to even be there. Maybe because there was a ton of screaming in the kitchen. I gave the restaurant another go on a Friday night, decided to take the wife out. Seemed as though I was at a shady kid hangout with kids going in and out of the door. This time I believe the owner was there and he didn't seem to mind the rif raf going in and out of the place. My wife is actually a food critic for a living, so we found this to be ironic.

The Bife Amigos is amazing - they guard the sauce recipe like it was nuclear launch codes, and rightly so. The garlic shrimp appetizer is also superb.
My wife and i have eaten here many times, and never had issues with the service.
Low ratings about the decor are old. They moved a couple of years ago and the new downtown location is far nicer, with excellent parking.

After reading other reviews, sounded ok, thought we'd try. Arrived at 6:15, told them we had a show at 7:30. Our food arrived at 7:25! Not sure why it took over an hour, especially since there was only one other table of diners. I ordered the chicken alentejana (as other reviewers suggested) and it was incredibly dry and overcooked. The rolls were large but dry. Disappointing. Our husbands said theirs was 'ok'.

I comeback here time and time again because the food is very good. However, slow moving waitresses with bad attitudes are making me rethink this dining choice. I think from now on I may just eat at the bar, they always seem to be pleasant.

I was very impressed by this restaurant. I juat happenned to be in the area and wanted a quick bite to eat. A paserby suggested I try Friend's Restaurant for a sandwich.
Next time I will try the "real" entre menu (steaks, poultry, seafood, etc.), but this time I just wanted to asuage my appetite. I ordered the steak sandwich with fries for $5.95 and loved it. It was very different (I assume authentic Portugese). I was also impressed by the service inluding rolls & butter while waiting for my steak sandwich ... No big deal you say? ... When is the last time you got rolls with a burger/sandwich order??
The owner stopped by and gave me a quick tour of the dining area (I was eating at the bar) and outside patio where tables will be set up soon as the weather warms up. The regular inside dining area is very quaint and has an authentic European flavor.
I will go back with my sweetie for a real dinner with a bottle of good Portugese wine ... maybe even some Port after dinner!!

The place is small ; and we waited for a waitress for about 20-25 minutes. The service was slow at first. The food was good. I'm not sure if I would ever dine there again. I would probably just take out the food.

I would say this is my favorite restaurant by far. The food is unbelievably good. Never had a bad meal, the staff is very friendly and attentive. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking to try a great Portuguese meal.

We were very dissapointed with our steaks. Very chewy and greasy. Atmosphere sucks, bar had shady guests that made my family unconfortable.
Definetly would not go back. The only good thing it was a relatively inexpensive waist of an afternoon.

Delicious! The grilled salmon was amazing, and the wine Laulita recommended was superb! Service was fantastic, and the atmosphere very inviting and relaxing. I expected the menu prices to be much higher for this level of quality.
Ordered a plate off the menu called
Chicken Alantejana. Plate contains cubed chicken and potatoes with shrimp over rice and butter/wine garlic sauce. Plate was enough to feed 2 people for 12.95. The sauce was so good i literally cleaned the plate with fresh portuguese rolls they get daily. The atmosphere was excellant with a beautiful bar, quaint lounge, and a dining room that made me feel like i was in europe. They had an outdoor patio that also served full menu, very private candle lit tables. The bartender walked me through the restaraunt and explained the menu item by item. I felt like i was in someones home. Excellent dining experience and i can"t wait to go back!

Visited Friends this weekend for the first time. The food was delicious. I got the Carne Alcarta which was a chunk pot roast with rice and potatoes. My husband got the fried smelts and he said they were also very good. Both dishes were on the daily specials list. Great waitstaff and bartenders!! Will be returning for sure :)

we went in after the kitchen was closed and the wait staff was ready to shut down. They were more than happy to serve us.... they gave great recommnedations.
