Myself and guest had lunch around noon on Thursday . We were the only customers at that time . The waitress must had to be new and working by herself .we ordered our lunch among a swarm of pestie flies.When our meal finally came , an uninvited black bug was walking over top of my side dish and the flies were still getting SECOND'S at our table. I sat there wondering what was going on in the kitchen and the critters back there. Our waitress was sitting at a back table near the bar ,.holding conversations with the bartender and the kitchen help. The place was dark, musky smelling and needed a Exterminater on the Restaurant ! Would I ever go back to The House Of Welch again ? NOT !! :(

My husband and I went to the House of Welsh because it was advertised in our Hotel Directory and was noted as being a historical family restaurant. The dishes in the ad looked great and seafood was noted as their specialty. The location was easy to find, so we decided to give them a try.
We arrived at 5:00p on New Year's Day - there was NO ONE in the restaurant and we waited for 15 minutes for a waitress to come out and see us, although I called "Hello?, Hello?"
Once seated and during our entire meal, through 6:15p, only 2 other elderly couples arrived for the dinner rush. That should have warned us away.
Our waitress would remind one of Tony Soprano's crazed sister, Janice. When we arrived and looked over the menu, I asked her about the family's history as there was a long article about it on page 2 of the menu. I asked her which member of the family was running the restaurant, currently. She told us that she had only worked there a few months and had no idea who was in charge. One of the relatives, she guessed. So much for knowing the menu.
The restaurant was out of several items and the waitress was unable to accommodate my husband's request for unseasoned, plain food, in nearly all cases. It became immediately apparent that all of the food was processed, from a food service distributor, and that the restaurant just heated and plated it. There was no home cooking happening here. The waitress could not take an order for anything freshly prepared.
Our food took a long time to come out and when it did, my fish sandwich was on 2 kaiser rolls instead of a hoagie roll, as they were out of them. My husband ordered a completely plain piece of rock fish with no oils or seasoning - it smelled very fishy, like fish going bad. We ate - the food was very mediocre and not at all memorable. It certainly was not plated with any pizzazz and felt like cafeteria food.
When we were done, I presented our waitress with a coupon from the hotel guide. She told us that she didn't know how to process a coupon and that we were getting a good price already. At that point, we told her not to worry about it, as we just wanted to get the hell out of there - it felt like we had fallen down a wormhole and had landed in a geriatric twilight zone.
We left - approximately 5 hours later, my husband started to vomit and vomited all night with what doctor's at the emergency room felt was food poisoning. Happy New Year's Day, right?
Do not waste your time or money eating at this restaurant. The food and service are horrible, the decor is late 70's, and the other few guests are late 80' & 90's. Do not make yourself sick when there are so many other choices in the Fenwick/Ocean City areas.
So sorry that this family restaurant's history does not deliver today - they have been in business since 1900. I'm pretty sure the fish they fed us had been frozen in their backroom since that time, too.
Stay away and stay safe!

Eat on the bar side! The menu there is about 1/2 price. The Beer Battered Flounder is absolutely fantastic!!! Best in MD for about $12.00!!!

We ate at the House of Welsh in winter of 2010- it was amazing! Ordered the special of the day which was Rockfish. AWESOME taste cooked perfect. Going again in Feb. 2012. Can't wait ;)

I have never had a problem with dining here. Good comfort food with a reasonable price. Nothing fancy, just good. The poster "Warren" doesn't know what he's saying. He probably wouldn't know good food if it hit him in the face. He's probably used to mickey d's. LOL

Simply put...do not eat at this dump! I made the huge mistake of taking my family here on August 20, 2010 and I will never...ever...return. I should have known when we first walked in (on a Friday night) and the place had about 15 customers in it. A steamed clams appetizer consisted of the smallest clams I have ever seen...practically requiring tweezers to eat them. My wife's salad was warm, wet, and full of stalks. My daughters entree was simply inedible (it literally smelled like vomit). The waiter graciously took it off of the bill...and later advised us that the manager had also smelled the dish and agreed that something was very wrong with it. I ordered the "beach burger"...which was served open-faced...and the tomato had a quarter-sized black core right in the middle...like an eyeball. This complete debacle of a meal cost me $75. I was still angry four days later and wrote a letter to the owner (Marty Welsh)...and received zero response. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY AT THIS HORRIBLE PLACE...TRUST ME...YOU WILL REGRET IT!
