We need sharks in our oceans. Without sharks and other top-level carnivores to keep populations of sub-predators in check, we run the risk of losing productive and well-balanced marine ecosystems to trophic collapse. If sharks continue to be killed just for their fins, the decline of sharks will upset the balance of healthy ocean and marine ecosystems and leave our children and grandchildren with a world that is less healthy. It is leading to the demise of sharks, the top predator in the ocean which helps maintain the balance of the ocean ecosystem. It has wreaked havoc on our oceans.
Shark finning is cruel and needs to end. Shark finning refers to the removal and retention of shark fins and the discard at sea of the carcass. The shark is most often still alive when it is tossed back into the water. Unable to swim, the shark slowly sinks toward the bottom where it is eaten alive by other fish.
