Today, in honor of Mardi Gras or Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day, my husband and I decided to go out to lunch and get pancakes. We decided to go to Ben Dews Clubhouse on 6th Ave. The menu offered a short stack of pancakes for $5.25 and the line under that said "Add 2 sausage links or 2 strips of bacon for $2.00" Because it was a special occasion we both decided to get the bacon. When the bill came, we had each been charged $2.50 for the bacon. When we asked why, as the menu had clearly said "2 strips of bacon for $2.00" we were told the menu was a misprint, because down under the individual items, bacon was listed for $1.25 a strip. Even when I pressed the issue, I was told "that's the way the computer bills it, too bad." I was also told that they had known that this was a problem since the menu was printed (they said the menus were 4 years old) and that they get people complaining about it all the time. I wasn't really concerned about the extra $1.00, but I WAS concerned about the false marketing. Frankly, I felt cheated. When I placed my order the waitress asked how many strips of bacon I wanted, and I opened the menu AGAIN and pointed to the line that said "Add 2 strips of bacon for $2.00". The waitress could have seen what I was pointing to, and, at that point, she could and SHOULD have said, "No, no, no, that's a misprint", but she just wrote down 2 strips of bacon. I think about how much additional money that restaurant has been making for FOUR YEARS. For me and my husband, it was only $1.00. By this time all the extra $1.00s have probably added up to enough to reprint the menu several times. We often go to Ben Dews Clubhouse, but not any more.
