Like many other folks traveling cross-country along Interstate 40, we couldn't go one mile further after a very long day, so we found ourselves in Santa Rosa for the night. The hotel recommended Lake City Diner as a great alternative to all the fast food to which we had almost started liking after all the miles from New York City. Years ago I had lived for a spell in Santa Fe and found myself craving some red chili. Since we were in New Mexico, having red chili for dinner was my goal for the evening.
We were the second guests to be seated in the restaurant. A teenaged girl took our orders. I ordered my dinner with red chili, not green. (You know you have spent time in New Mexico when you have a preference.) We waited and waited! Several other tables started to fill up, but still no food. Finally our dinner arrived, but instead of red, my plate contained green chili. I called the young girl over and asked her to replace my dinner with red chili. My traveling companion received his dinner, ate it all, and was ready to leave - and still no dinner for me! Finally, I went up to the counter and asked the same girl who had taken our orders if I might speak to the owner/ manager/cook. (We could see the elderly woman cooking in the tiny kitchen from our table. (There were only the cook and the waitress working the entire establishment. By this time every table was full and still no food out to anyone at all). We had been watching her now for over two hours! She came out eventually and screamed at me that when a person changes their order mid-stream they would just have to sit and wait!! When I protested that I had given my order to the girl correctly the first time and that SHE had incorrectly written it down, she made an off-color comment about the two of us, because we were two men traveling together. She then told me to pay up and hit the road or she would call in the police!
What a great evening we spent in Santa Rosa, New Mexico and in particular "The Lake City Diner"! I ended up eating a bag of pretzels out of a machine back at the hotel for my dinner. The machine never once called me any bad names and got my order right the very first time...
