Decided to try Boondocks in McConnelsville, Ohio last night for a steak. Started with some crab cakes.....worst I've ever had. The best description I can give is it tasted like someone soaked 2 cardboard patties in 2 year old frying grease, added a little spice and slapped it on a plate. But I can get over a bad appetizer when I know I have a steak coming. (I'm what you might call a pretty heavy eater :) So the entree comes out....1/3 rack ribs and an 8 oz ribeye. The ribs were pretty good so I move over to the steak with gusto. To my dismay, this sucker is still mooing and I ordered medium rare. ( Btw, I love rare meat, I think I just order medium rare to not feel like such a carnivore but this piece of meat is just plain uncooked.) I attempted to get down 2 small bites but after much chewing and realizing it probably wasn't the safest idea to continue. I politely notified my waitress (who had an excellent personality and great service) that the steak was undercooked. She kindly took it back to the kitchen. A couple minutes later the chef and owner returns with my steak and requests that I cut into it to verify that it is cooked to order. By his demeanor, he seems upset with me and in poor mood. I cut into it and it is now an obvious medium not medium rare but his attitude is so stand-offish that I just tell him that it looks good and thank you.
He then gave our waiter grief in the kitchen. Being such a small place his demeanor was making myself and dinner guests very uncomfortable so we politely asked our waiter for the check. (This was not an attempt for free food, we paid in full asking for no discount and tipped our waiter appropriately for the excellent service on the waiter's part.) Again, our gracious waiter apoloqized for the food and handled the situation with grace and expediency - so 5 stars for the wait staff.
While preparing to leave the owner came out and said he would not be charging us for the food. I would not accept that as we did eat some so he offered a $20 gift card to return. He explained that his restaurant was to be featured soon on national tv and for this reason he did not want unhappy customers. At this point we reeeaaally just wanted no more than to leave what seemed to be a bad episode of the twilight zone but continued to be very polite.
Upon departing, he asked what was wrong with the food, why we weren't taking it with us. My dinner guest politely told him that it wasn't necessarily the food, that it was how the situation was handled by him that we were uncomfortable with. His response was rolling his eyes at us.....professional eh?
We politely departed leaving the gift card on the table. No need to repeat that mistake.
