I’ve eaten at The Remendy Restaurant several times and enjoyed the food, drinks and atmosphere very much. The last time I was there I took my older brother and introduced him to the owner. He asked her if she graduated from Moshannon Valley High School and when she answered “Class of 1979” my brother said he graduated in 1957. She then retrieved from her restaurant library a 1957 MVSH Class Yearbook for us to look at while she prepared our dinner. Apparently the restaurant has numerous high school yearbooks for customers to view - many of which were contributed by Frank Montouro who was a MVHS teacher and baseball coach.
The uncle of the owner was a well known bartender named Leonard. Leonard’s bar was a favorite destination
for my father many years ago. My father would always ask Leonard to cook him a Whiting fish for lunch and over the years my father ate a lot of delicious fish lunches cooked by Leonard. Ask to see a photo of Leonard (who lived to be 94) when you visit the restaurant. If you like good Polish food you will like the special dinners prepared at The Remedy (the family has a strong Polish ancestry.)
The restaurant previously was Moran’s Drug Store and many years ago had a soda fountain where you could get ice cream sundaes, banana splits, etc. The restaurant has restored the interior to preserve the originial embossed tin walls and ceilings as much as possible and have many photos and malt-shop type items found during restoration.
This restaurant is a great nostalgic retreat for anyone who grew up near for the town of Houtzdale, Pennsylvania.
