Good Intentions, Poor Implementation.
Our planned Christmas Eve dinner with my parents was regrettably spoiled by a terrific lack of service at Galen Hall Restaurant. Our group of four arrived right on time for our scheduled seating (this was a special holiday event with planned seating times) and ended up waiting a total of more than forty minutes at our table without once seeing our server. I believe we were incredibly patient, chatting patiently at our table for more than twenty minutes before we began trying to attract attention and get some service. The young hostess made several half-hearted attempts by filling our water glasses and delivering rolls (but no silverware or butter!). We noticed that several nearby groups from the earlier seating were just beginning to get their entrees, so things were apparently running slow from the kitchen. When other tables seated well after us began to get service before us, we left and found another restaurant for our Christmas Eve celebration.
Clearly, the servers were overwhelmed and/or understaffed this night. They made no attempt to greet, take drink orders, prioritize or pace tables. I blame a lack of training coupled with a too-ambitious event. I feel this restaurant needs serious leadership changes-- not only because of the appalling lack of service, but the apathetic response from the management when we asked when we could expect a server at our table.
Overall, this (our first) visit to Galen Hall Restaurant was a great disappointment because the menu sounded quite good, and the food we saw at other tables appeared to be well prepared. It could have been a very pleasant experience.
About me: Young professional, dine out frequently (5-6 times per week) at home in PA and when I travel (US and some international). We most often visit casual/fine dining restaurants. I am very familiar with good service and how things operate at a properly run restaurant. This is not yet a properly run restaurant...

My husband and I would come up to Galen Hall to the lounge to watch some Phillies games have beers and get something to eat. The food was okay but we really enjoyed the bartender. Over the past few month and seeing how they treated their employees we never understood why she stayed to hear they now push everyone good out the door is pathetic!! There is nothing to offer there but there were a few good faces keeping us NOT anymore we will NEVER go back and we will let everyone we know.

What happened??? We used to LOVE Galen Hall!!! Will never go there again! Food was below average and service even worse. My family used to love going there...great food and lots of friendly faces! Not anymore...place was empty! I understand why! The staff could not have been less interested in whether or ot we were satisfied! As I said, we will not be going back! What a huge loss for this area!

First visit in several years and very disappointed! The physical facelift does not make up for the drastic decline in service and food. I am saddened that Berks County has lost all that used to be Galen Hall!

I recently visted Galen Hall for a family function/dinner. I was impressed by the atmosphere and that was all. The service was lousy. The waitress showed no attention to detail. My beer came out missing about an inch of beer from the top. What bar tender sends out a drink like that and what waitress grabs the beer and doesn't ask them to top it off. We finally received our bread when our meals arrived, well over 40 minutes into our timeframe of being there and after asking multiple times.

The food, at best was a C-. The salads were very small. My steak, was blah. No real seasoning or juicy taste. The steak came with parmesean steak fries. Four of them. Yes, only four. The waitress brought our deserts and never noticed that we did not have forks, so we had to track her down.

Overall, the experience was NOT what it was 7-8 years ago when my wife and I would go there every New Years Eve. I won't be back. The lack of attention to detail on the servers, bartenders and chef's parts is unacceptable. Especially based on their "fine dining" prices and lack of what I felt was fine dining quality.

A girl friend and I went here for lunch and we were just thrilled with the service we received as well as the food! We ordered the crab cakes and the Galen Hall Burger. Highly recommended! They also had the fireplace blazing whiched added to the atmosphere! Loved it!

Galen Hall used to be the the premier Restaurant and Golf Club in the area. But no more. Since changing management 3 years ago, the quality of food and service has deteriorated severely. It has taken such a serious downturn because the Management (The Fisher family of Bob Fisher's Chevrolet) is concerned only with their own welfare. They treat employee's as only objects of their establishment. This is exactly the opposite of Galen Halls traditions they claim to uphold.

Their penny pinching methods have caused almost their entire customer base to look elsewhere in the coming years for their restaurant, rest, and relaxation needs.

A number of other restaurants are all within close driving distance. Check them out below, and don't support these heartless people.

I had been a frequent diner of Galen Hall over the past 8 years. I was there with some friends on Friday, October 2, 2009. Not quite sure what happened...the food was terrible, you used to get 3 sides with your dinner, marinated mushrooms were served and not to the prices have become to expensive. When you would arrive for dinner the restaurant was full and people sitting at the bar. Now, there is hardly anyone there. Well, now it will be emptier. We will not return!!!

New ownership...new management...new kitchen staff! Shouldn't even be allowed to call it Galen Hall anymore. There isn't even a small resemblance to the restaurant that was always filled with good food, excellent service, and friends. I dined there a few weeks ago to use a gift card I have been given. I will not return! Face lift of the physical building does not make up for all that has been lost. The new management should be ashamed regarding how they treat the customers and at times, even the staff. Never again for my family and many friends!

This place has gone so far down hill. How sad this is! Used to be one of my favorite spots, but EVERYTHING has changed (and not for the better). Prices are WAY TOO HIGH and service leaves much to be desired. What happened?

Going down hill quickly!
