I took two relatives to Hokkaido's for dinner a few days ago. I ordered the fried oysters and the scallops. My cousin had some sort of eel dish and my brother had the Mongolian beef. On our way home we each confessed that nothing we ordered came remotely close to our expectations. I used to dive for sea scallops back in the day and know just about every thing there is to know about scallops; size, color, taste, be they wet or dry ( wet meaning they are treated with tri-poly phosphates). The oysters tasted nothing like oysters. Just little pieces of fried up who knows what. My brother said the beef in his dish was way to chewy and mostly just noodles. My real beef has to do with the scallops. After doing a little looking on line I learned that imitation scallops (made from white fish) are the norm in many Asian restaurants only because many customers are not aware of the difference.
