While some find the menu at the BBQ Barn 'comfort food' and their restaurant of choice in Butner, I find it as a convenient place to stop if I don't want to drive all the way to McDonalds at I-85. I have eaten there two or three times a month for the past four years, and the food is consistently bad. The BBQ isn't bad, but the rest of the food is lacking in taste and portion size.
Last night I had the fried chicken. I ordered the white meat, thinking it would be more moist than the dark. It tasted like greasy dust. Imagine that they start with a sickly frozen chicken, then double batter the meat before it is thrown in the fryer. My chicken must have been in the fryer as long as it was in the freezer because I broke the plastic fork trying to pull it apart. The wing (shouldn't count as a piece of chicken it was so shriveled up) yielded no meat at all. The breast reluctantly broke apart in my hand, sending pieces of hard batter all across the table. The chicken was so overcooked, it was mummified. I expend less energy trying to break open crab legs than I spent trying to find edible chicken under that hard fried crust.
The butter beans were OK, the slaw pleasantly creamy - a good match on a BBQ sandwich. I passed on the dessert this time because the slices of chocolate chess pie are so small they just aren't worth the price. On the whole, the prices at the BBQ Barn aren't bad...you just don't get a lot of food for the little you pay. The free sweet tea is a nice concession to the small portions of food. Diners feel the need to fill their Styrofoam cups on the way out simply because they want to get their money's worth.
The staff are friendly, and I feel sorry for them. Usually they are young ladies in their 20s, and it appears some did not make it through high school. I'm sorry that they've limited their career potential to such a small restaurant in a small town because there's no way they will earn enough to move out of their parents' homes. Still, they keep the restaurant clean and thank you for stopping by on your way out the door. If the restaurant ever makes enough money to splurge on updates, they could purchase a new color TV set. The one they have now hints at some pastel colors, but it's obviously on its last legs. At least they have the set tuned to a fair and balanced channel so that diners don't have to watch the propaganda machine for our socialist government.
I'll go back to the BBQ Barn again the next time I can't figure out what I want to eat. Usually I read when I'm eating, so I don't really notice how bad the food really is.

Very good comfort food! The BBQ is excellent and the desserts are homemade. Good quality food at a reasonable price.
