Introduced to this wonderful little place via my neighbor. Have been back many times. Good quality food, reasonably priced, especially for the valley. Adorably eccentric on different levels of dining experiences. What really won me over was that one day as a special item, the chef offered duck breast which I love. It was delicious. A week or so later I made reservations and asked if by chance they had duck breast on the menu for the evening of our reservation. I was forwarded to the chef who informed me that he had not intended to have that as a special but would since someone was requesting it. Needless to say the duck was perfect as was the evening.

Tonight I took my friend Maureen’s recommendation and treated myself to dinner at Café Scandia. Talk about a treat! After eating only fruit since New Year’s Day, I was overdue for some hearty, home-style cooking on a chilly night. I was greeted at the door by a smiling hostess whose accent may have been French. The room seemed to be humming from relaxed conversations at the cloth-covered tables. The room décor shone with soft lighting and subdued elegance and the menu choices were marvelous. One dish I considered was the beef stroganoff, highly praised by a guest at an adjacent table, and I was also very tempted to have the lamb shanks, but I finally decided on the wiener schnitzel. A ginger carrot soup preceded a tossed salad of mixed greens. I squeezed some lemon over the just-right crispness of the wiener schnitzel which was served with sliced mushrooms, mashed potatoes, and a bright medley of vegetables. I enjoyed a glass of merlot with my dinner and chose apple strudel for dessert with coffee. Everything was excellent. What made the evening even more memorable to me was Janis, the server. I welcomed her nonintrusive efficiency and laughed at her pithy expressions tossed here and there, funny enough for me to retrieve a mini notebook to write them down in. I really think her demeanor encouraged guests to smile and chat with others at neighboring tables. The atmosphere was a jovial one at Café Scandia, one well-suited to a little place in a town with a big heart, namely Palm Springs.
