Built in the late 1800's, the Blue Heron is a beautiful, rustic restored tavern. The redwood-finished dining room features beef, fish, chicken, and vegetarian dishes. In the tavern the full menu is served including hearty pub food, beer and full liquor. The "Blue" as locals call it, is well known in the summer for their yummy barbecued oysters.
This quaint little gem tucked away just off of Hwy. 116 in historic Duncans Mills, CA was wildly popular for many years, but closed for a couple of years (was sold) and just reopened in Dec. 2008. The current owners plan to retain the original charm of the place, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" sums it up. The locals LOVE the "Blue" and you'll see an interesting mix of folks from around the area: cowboys, business folk, golfers, vacationers, surfer dudes, it seems this place attracts just about everyone looking for reasonably priced food, drink and fun. People go out of their way to trek up from East and South Bay just to eat here and experience the charm of Duncans Mills.
Live bands play in the tavern from 6:00 pm until about 9:30 or 10:00 Wednesday-Saturday, with live music on the outdoor garden patio on Sunday afternoons.
Best bets: calamari, roasted beat salad, onion rings, 100% Angus burger, tri tip, chicken pot pie, meatloaf, mac & cheese, baby back ribs, and the Bailey's cheesecake.
The staff and chef are fairly new, so they're still working out the kinks with fast service and consistency, but the staff is friendly and quite accommodating and everyone has a great time. It's a very welcoming, casual, comfortable place. No one there is pretentious...it's a down home kind of place.
Be sure to check out the historic marker on the wall as you walk into the restaurant...you'll get a very interesting history lesson about the infamous villain "Black Bart".
