My husband and I went to La Madrina for the first time last night and I must say that I haven't been this excited about a pizza place in a long time. Their menu offers the classic items you would expect: pizza (thick or thin crust), calzones, pasta, and hot sandwiches, but there was one unexpected item that caught my eye... The Steak Bomber! It's thinly sliced steak (like in a philly) and mozzarella cheese (plus three toppings of your choice) wrapped in dough and baked to hot melty goodness. We ordered the Number Three: mushrooms, onions, and black olives, but substituted green bell pepper for the onions. While waiting for our steak bomber (the plan was to split one and then order more food if we were still hungry) we had a glass of Mirror Pond. I was very please to note that of their three beers on tap two are real beers (Mirror Pond & Fat Tire). The Mirror Pond was hoppy and delicious and I admit that I had more than just the sip I said I would (Richard was the one who actually ordered the beer.) Our steak bomber came promptly and was cut in half on two plates with a bowl of marinara for each of us. I really appreciate places that will split an entree for you without hassle and La Madrina did it without us even asking. The steak bomber was great! The meat was juicy, the cheese was melty, ours toppings plentiful, and the thin casing of pizza dough was perfectly crispy on the outside and slightly chewy on the inside. Although the steak bomber was huge (half a bomber and a small bowl of marinara filled the plate), Richard was still hungry so we ordered half a crostino loaf. The crostino loaf is La Madrina's cheesy garlic bread. Oh, it melts in your mouth! Each slice was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The garlic butter was sweet and rich, but not overwhelming. The golden brown cheese baked on top and the side of marinara for dipping had us wrestling to see who would get the last slice. As if the food weren't reason enough to come back again, the service was very friendly and quick even though there were several other couples and groups in the restaurant. If you're looking for La Madrina it's a little hard to find. It's on the South-East corner of Oracle & Magee in the Trader Joe's plaza. It's tucked away in the corner next to Table Talk. Look for it. It's worth it. -Rebecca Combs Owner of Design & Adorn Beading Studio |
