La Casita Mexican Restaurant
I read the previous reviews, and I hope I have the right place. The service wasn't superb, but my experience was good, particularly the food. I can't remember the name of the meal, but I had a tamale, enchiladas, crispy beef taco, rice, and beans. Two things I'm very picky about when I eat at a restaurant: 1- I want HOT food, hot enough where I have to blow to cool it, and I want to taste spice and flavor (especially in Mexican food). I was very happy with the meal, the food didn't turn cold after 3 minutes, and I didn't have to add salt. They didn't charge me for a side bowl of cilantro and extra limes. Honestly, I've only been happy with two Mexican restaurants in Arizona so far, and La Casita is one of them.
I ate here twice and both times, the food was very bland. I've had Tom Ka Gai, Pho, spring rolls, and Pad Thai. I have to agree with the other review about them serving the worst Pho. They are severely overpriced. One of the girls there floored me when she didn't know what Laotian food was, nothing about it, and she's supposed to have been from Thailand. This would explain the bad food.
Mantis Gourmet Chinese
The restaurant seating area is tiny and a bit claustrophobic, the service is ok, but the food is phenomenal. I came from Texas and enjoyed authentic food at homes and restaurants located in the heart of Laotian, Vietnamese, and Thai communities. The cooks at Mantis deliver that same flavor and style. The Tom Ka Gai, fried garlic pork, and bun with any style meat are amazingly good. Generous portions, too. As far as strictly Asian restaurants go, Mantis and one other restaurant located off Orange Grove and La Cholla are the only 2 non-sushi Asian restaurants I'll spend money at.
I came here in February 2016, and was severely disappointed in the food and cocktail. No one who's been there that I talked to had anything good to say about it. I drive by it everyday going to and from work, and the restaurant's outdoor artwork always drew my attention as a cool place to check out. When I and my boyfriend finally stopped in, the first thing that struck me was that the place is too dark inside. You can't see what you're eating. The menu features items that seem out of place with the kind of other mom and pop and fast food joints surrounding, but I liked that. I think their food is best described as eclectic / gourmet. The girl serving us was friendly, and the kitchen stays open until 2AM, and that's the best thing to be said about Dante's Fire. I ordered a Bloody Mary and asked for it to be extra spicy. I tasted the first attempt, and took up the girl's offer to have the bartender add more Tabasco and spice to it. The second time tasted absolutely no different from the first. We ordered the brisket sliders appetizer, and I was surprised for the price they charged that 1) the beef was very stringy and tough, and 2) they served a cheap white bun, the kind sold at the dollar store. Our entrees came, I had the flatiron steak cooked rare, but what they served me was beef browned on the outside and absolutely raw on the inside. RARE does NOT mean RAW! I didn't eat it. My boyfriend had a burger which was very overpriced, and the meat portion was not what the menu promised. Waste of money. We ended eating a frozen pizza at home.
I came here in February 2016, and found THE spot to visit for an upscale treat. The food is amazingly delicious, portions generous without being overwhelming, and the food is simply amazingly delicious. Be prepared to spend a little more than you would at an average venue like Applebee's or Chili's, but you will get what you pay for in the quality of food, service, and ambience. The crab cake is divine.
I am used to eating homecooked Mediterranean and Eastern European food, and the food served here is on par with that: it surpasses mere restaurant fare. And no wonder, considering that the chef and his wife bake, roast, and cook everything themselves. The menu offers dishes that are fairly basic to those regions, but the food is delicious and filling. Be prepared to spend more than you would at an Applebee's or a Chili's.
I am not from Arizona, and this is the first state that I've seen the trend where Asian restaurants also serve American food, particularly breakfast, and also Mexican food. Their Asian food is pretty good, I always order the Spring Rolls (called Summer Rolls here in AZ for weird reason), and I've had chicken larb, breakfast, Pad Thai, lo mein, and more. One thing about the larb, and this applies to every single Asian restaurant that I've ordered larb from in Arizona so far: larb should come served with cilantro, mint, basil, cabbage, and sticky rice. I don't know why Asian restaurants won't serve sticky rice or the other herbs, and those ingredients are what make the dish. The prices are low, the portions generous, service good, speed not so much. One unique characteristic: the various pin-up art painted everywhere.
One of those places that serves American food, particularly breakfast, Mexican food, and Asian food. The best feature is their breakfast special. The Asian food was good, but I expected better from the Korean cook. One time I ordered nachos, and they were sub-par: a whole bunch of chips with a small bit of dry hamburger meat dumped on top, some diced tomatoes, and some slivers of cheese. Dismal. Breakfast is their redeeming quality. Prices low. Service and speed good.
I come here about 2-5 times each month. The #1 attraction for me is the quality of their fish. Excellent fresh tuna, salmon, and yellowtail sashimi. Another huge plus point, they serve cold baby octopus salad - one of my favorite dishes that I haven't found anywhere else in Arizona. Their squid salad is also the best anywhere: large chunks of squid and some octopus, fun to chew on, not chopped fine. Their spicy tuna, salmon, yellowtail rolls, and their Arizona rolls are so good, that I break down and order one or more, instead of sticking to the sashimi. Two of their specialty rolls I highly recommend are the Christmas roll and my favorite, the lollipop roll. The items are reasonably priced, I get good sized portions (for sashimi and sushi), and once again, I must stress that the fish is excellent quality.
