Hunan Garden occupies the previously vacant space in the Ashburn Village Shopping Center that was once the home of the defunct House of Emperor restaurant. The restaurant is fairly new and I haven't yet eaten a wide variety of their food. I would have had more variety but I hadn't had Yellow Bird in some time and it is consistently so good I tend to always order it.
Bearing in mind that I've had a limited sample of their menu, some dishes I ordered were just average, but some were 5-star and not available in other Ashburn area restaurants.
Although their name suggests they specialize in spicy hot Hunan-style, my favorite to date have been their Cantonese style dishes.
My favorite is Yellow Bird, a meatless dish I had long ago and far away. It is made from bean-curd skin that is arranged to resemble an origami bird. At Hunan Garden it is stuffed with spinach.
They also make a tofu and black mushroom dish that I order because of the great flavor of the black mushrooms.
The restaurant hasn't been open long so I've only tried a few other things. Their Mushi Pork is not as tasty as I've had elsewhere. The hot and sour soup is nothing to rave about, but good enough that I've ordered it a few times. Their Won Ton soup is better, in my humble opinion.
Whole grain brown rice can be substituted for $0.50 extra. They deliver.
