My friend and I went to Zulas Restaurant in Nov 2009 and had a crappy time. The waitresses ignored us completely and the restaurant was dreary. Worn out and dirty are the words that come to mind. I’ll never go back there again, one time was too many.
The waitress showed us to a table and gave us the menus. We saw the prices on the food was a couple bucks higher for the same type of food we could get anywhere in town. We asked for water to drink, the waitress gave us a funny look. She left and never returned at all, even though she was serving the other customers at the tables right next to us. There was another waitress also serving the same tables. Both waitresses would look away when they walked by our table. They went by often, and would even turn their back towards us. After about 20 minutes, I went and served myself at the buffet. I asked the waitress that was standing by the buffet a question about the buffet and she mumbled a reply and rushed away from me. The buffet food was OK for the price, the kind of food you would expect at a nursing home. My friend was still sitting at the table waiting for service. He decided that he would get lunch somewhere else and went outside to wait in the car. I told him that if I had not got the buffet food, then we would just leave right then. I finished my food and watched the waitresses avoid me. I didn’t say anything, just to see if they would ever notice me and try to do a decent job. Of course I never got the water, a bill, or any service at all. It was not busy at all for the waitresses and the other customers were patient and nice. Other customers that came in later than me already had their bill and were leaving.
I went up to the cash register to pay, and waited about 10 minutes while the waitress wandered around the area. I was being ignored so much that I was tempted to just walk out and not pay for the meal at all. When she finally came to the register, she gave me a hard stare and said “What!” at me. I said I wanted to pay for the buffet meal. She pretended she couldn’t hear me and kept saying “What! What!”, and trying to get me to repeat my words. She stopped doing that when another customer came by. She said that she had to get the bill for my meal and wandered off again. Then I saw her serving water to other customers and wandering around the place. She finally came back with a bill about 5 minutes later. I doubt she even wrote on the paper, the way she held it up and away from me so I couldn’t see the front of it. Then the other waitress came over and stood by the register to watch the show. The waitress blurted out the price of the meal loudly at me. “$ 8.50!” Like it was a big deal to talk to me.
I paid for the food. I told them in a nice voice that they ignored my friend and now he was going to buy lunch somewhere else. The waitress gave me a hard stare, then turned her face down to hide her mean smile. She said something to the other waitress in another language with a snicker. The other waitress made her eyes all big and gave me fake apology. It was like she was pretending to be a robot.
I could have complained and demanded better service, but I chose to be nice just to see what they would do. What they did is treat me like dirt. I look nice and am not mean at all, so I don’t know why I was treated like a bad dog. The waitresses were pretty old and overweight, with odd mean attitudes. I guess that is what they do for fun in Nogales, maybe there is nothing good on TV.
Of course my friend went to McDonald’s down the street, the food was good and cheaper, and the pretty girl behind the counter was nice to him. I had to buy a soda there because I had never even got water at Zulas.
