On January 18, 2014, my daughter got married and chose the Calgary Italian Club and Roma Catering for the reception venue. Roma Catering has a wonderful reputation and provided outstanding food for my own wedding 31 years ago. I was therefore confident the food would be spectacular.
The poor service and unhelpful behaviour of the staff completely ruined the entire event for me. Their actions were inexcusable and left 100 guests in shock at the woeful neglect they observed.
When the booking contract was made several months ago, it was stressed that a high chair was mandatory as the bride had a child under 12 months old. We were told that 2 high chairs were available and that there would be no concerns to that regard.
As the mother of the bride and grandmother of the infant, I was in charge of taking care of the baby. As we sat down for dinner, a request was made for a high chair. A young woman advised me that there was no high chair available and offered me a booster seat.
A booster chair is not recommended for infants so young, especially when the chairs lack armrests.
The employee stated there was nothing she could do because the chairs were being used at a 50th anniversary dinner in the lower level of the Calgary Italian Club.
I asked to speak to someone who could help me. She responded that the manager was not working and that she checked with the maitre'd/concierge who said nothing could be done.
I told her that was unacceptable. Her attitude was emphatic that there was nothing that could be done. She offered to bring up a high chair when the meal downstairs was finished.
I told her that was unacceptable because by that time, our meal would also be over. Several people at my table were shocked at her dismissive and rude response as she reiterated there was nothing she could do. Her lack of compassion and unwillingness to help not only left me angry and upset, but also the other guests at our table and nearby.
Because I was forced to hold an active 12 month old baby in my lap throughout the entire dinner, I was not able to eat. Cutlery and glasses had to be put out of reach and hot food could not be placed in front of me. People watched upset and disturbed that the I could not partake in the dinner. Offers were made by several bridesmaids and other nearby guests to hold the baby for a while so I could eat, but the baby was upset and made strange with everyone and would not go to anyone other than her parents, the bride and groom, who could not help me at that time of the reception because of the speeches and activities of the head table.
Throughout the dinner, the employee passed by me numerous times, observing me with the restless baby on my lap and without so much as a fork or glass in front of me. At no time did she reappear with a high chair, even when the dinner in the lower level was finished. In fact, she passed me by with barely a glance with an attitude so callous and arrogant, family and friends were shocked.
In my career, I was the manager of a large government department with in excess of 160 employees in several different divisions. I know a lot about customer service and have even trained and written directives in this regard. If this employee worked for me, she would have lost her job.
There is no excuse for what happened, especially when it is the parents of the bride who ultimately provided the funds to pay for the $10,000 fee for the venue and food.
I was told by the guests that the food was outstanding - salt on the wounds of someone forced to watch everyone else eat and enjoy their meal.
We have two more family weddings scheduled for later in 2014. Because of what happened, other venues are being sought.
To make matters worse, the aunt of the groom had her purse stolen from a table near the entrance. It was later recovered in the parking lot with all the money gone.
Definitely not recommended. A shocking occurrence that should never have happened.
