Cella blew us away last night.
A little background…my husband and I both love to cook and rarely go out to eat locally because we are so often disappointed. So, when we travel, we choose a destination based on the number of Michelin restaurants in the vicinity. However, a friend recommended Cella and we made a reservation to give it a try. Wow.
We arrived a few minutes late and were greeted by a lovely host who showed us a table that we did not like, so she just smiled and let us to choose an alternative. No fuss.
Our server shared her welcoming attitude walking us through the menu, never “upselling” but chatting with us over wine and food choices to make sure we would be happy. We chose white wines by the glass and two appetizers: the Hamachi and the Shrimp beignets. The Hamachi came topped with delicate roe, and little delectable flowers from their garden. It melted in our mouths. As did the shrimp beignets—light and delicious.
We then ordered the Diver Scallops to share and the side dish of beets. The scallops were perfectly seared and juicy inside served with fresh corn kernels, cavatelli, and mushrooms all in a very light and perfect sauce that pulled everything together. The beets were diced perfectly with chunks of avocado and a small but just right serving of greens on a bed of hummus. Like everything else, it all fit together deliciously—every single bite.
The desserts—a huckleberry mousse and a chocolate confection—were the final amazing touches.
The ambience, table settings and service were all fluid, beautiful, happy, welcoming throughout. We never had to wait for anything. We asked our server’s name at the end (Lily) because we liked her so much. She showed us around after we finished.
We cannot wait to return—with friends this time. This was one of the very best restaurant experiences we have ever had—anywhere--and to think it is right here in Monterey! Lucky us!!!
