My husband, Geary and I are married about 33 years. We took many an anniversary road trips back when we were just starting out and didn't have much money. One of our usual stops would be in Eureka. We had always celebrated our anniversary dinner at Tomaso's restaurant in downtown Eureka. It seems as one gets older and time passes, there is less free time as there are more and more obligations that we had to take on especially with aging parents... and things just piles up. Our friends also had grown older, retired, moved out of the area or passed away. Years just flew by.

Well, this year, my husband and I decided to STOP EVERYTHING and spend 24 hours a day with each other on an uninterrupted 2 week vacation. We are going to re-kindled one of our favorite anniversary trips. We decided take a ROAD TRIP to visit all of our old remaining friends and to go to Eureka to find Tomaso's. I remembered Tomasa’s restaurant was the most romantic place for us. I remember the stairs to the upstairs dining area. I remember where our table was located if I were to be there at that restaurant again.
When we were in Old Town Eureka doing some shopping, we could not find Tomaso's. Local people said that the restaurant had closed down. It was so disappointing. We were ready to get back in our car and leave the area. I happened to stop by one last shop. One clerk at the wine store informed us ONLY the name closed. It's still owned by the SAME family but it's sold to the owner's children. It opened back up under the name of GABRIEL'S, name of the one of their siblings that passed away. It's in the same location.

We walked around and found Tomaso's (now named Gabriel's). It's painted a different color. We walked in and walked around, introduced ourselves to the sons. We went back to Gabriel's that night for dinner. The food was absolutely wonderful and delicious. We walked up the stairs and sat at our table in the corner by the back door. The restaurant used to have different color candles shoved in empty wine bottles and the rainbow of color wax melted down the neck. Now they have cloth over tables. The staff was wonderful. The house salad is not listed on the menu. It has walnuts, strawberries, blue cheese on top of greens. It was quite tasty and refreshing. I saw veal marsala on the lunch menu earlier but not on the dinner menu. I asked our waiter if the chef could make Chicken Marsala. My husband saw Chicken Penne Pesto on the menu. He doesn’t like pesto and asked if he can have Chicken Penne Alfredo instead. No problem. The food was absolutely delicious. The merlot just complimented our dinner so well. We ordered tiramisu for dessert. No disappointment here either.

My husband and I started this anniversary road trip two weeks earlier to try to re-discover our “old selves” again. We drove 310 miles to find Tomaso’s. While the NAME of the restaurant has changed from Tomaso’s to GABRIEL'S, it’s still under the management of the owner’s sons, daughters and relatives. The service and the food were just as great as we remembered it, if not EVEN more so. It was like coming home again. As long as Gabriel’s stays open in business, we will return.

Love Gabriel's. Their spaghetti and meatballs are the best! Their food is consistently good. I have never been disappointed.

This restaurant has got to be Humboldt County's best kept secret! Pleasant atmosphere, clean, great server and the food was outstanding. Will go again and again and again. Can't believe people aren't buzzing about this place.
