I didn't stay in the restaurant to eat, but the food is what's important anyway. From what I could see of the place when I walked in, it didn't seem to have the horrifying, trying-too-hard feel to it. It was a nice, open space.
I had the pimento cheese sandwich and poblano soup. I've read some reviews about Nuevo that say the prices are too high and the food is just okay. That sort of review would be appropriate for, say, Small Planet and Hester's Cafe. The pimento cheese sandwich I had was unlike any other I've had. It was delicious and I was grateful not to get two slices of bread with an orange, creamy spread stuffed in between. The poblano soup was creamy and scrumptious and lived up to all the hype.
The staff was kind and not subtly threatening like I've read elsewhere.
I'd like to go back again, for sure. Anyone who feels underwhelmed by the quality of the food at Nuevo Cafe, or is overwhelmed by its quirkiness (which I did not detect) should just be grateful we have places like this in our town. It sure beats the heck out of eating at Subway or Pizza Hut on my lunch hour.
