An interesting experience, to say the least. I had found the $14.95 “Lobster Madness” special while internet searching for a local seafood restaurant. It seemed to be touted as “fantastic” by the majority of reviewers, so I thought I would give it a try. Some local construction, and the resultant lack of available street parking, necessitated a walk of four or five blocks from the nearest lot. Due to the time of day, however (after 5:00), parking was free.
The exterior is nice and inviting, with an outdoor seating area, which today was empty, a menu board, and enough window advertising that know that this must be the place. I walked in, was greeted, and was immediately seated. There was only one other table with diners when I arrived, but I was pretty early, and the place filled up moderately as the hour went on. My server arrived immediately, the waitress being extremely pleasant and welcoming. I put in my drink order: a nice, cold Guinness that arrived in no time, needlessly perused the menu (which for some reason is festooned with children’s crayon drawings on the cover), and upon the waitresses return, I put in my order: The “Lobster Madness” special, and a bowl of Lobster Bisque. The bisque was out in two minutes, as well as a small plate of crusty French bread. One of my few complaints of the evening – the bread was cold. Warming it would have helped tremendously. The bread was accompanied by a generous supply of real butter pats. Real butter, always a good start, a good sign, and always a win.
The bisque itself, while flavorful, was thin. It did not quite have the silky mouth feel that I associate with a bisque. It was not bad, it was just not outstanding for the price. Little bits of lobster were present throughout.
As I waited the few moments for my entrée to arrive, and while the assorted tools and supplies for my Lobster Madness were placed on my table (a claw cracker, a small three tined fork, a lobster bib, and best of all – a chromed candle warmed bathtub of drawn butter – excellent touch), I had a chance to look around. Jack’s is an interesting mix of upscale fancy (such as the almost formal place settings and red checkered tablecloths), and the unusual. An example of the latter being the giant mural of a rodeo cowboy riding a 20 foot Lobster on the wall above the bar. Yep. No need to re-read that – I said a 20 foot lobster. The walls are decorated in a crustacean theme, lobster being the sea creature of choice.
My one-pound, single-clawed lobster arrived as promised, paired up with a lemon wedge for him, butter, sour cream and chives for the potato. Alongside this was a lightly sautéed carrot and green bean mixture that appeared to be fresh, and not as is so often the case, out of a can. Claw cracker in hand, and bib in place, I began. The lobster was perfectly cooked. Hot, and not overcooked or chewy. The potato was well prepared, as were the veggies. No complaints at all there. My server came back an appropriate number of times to ask on another beer, refill my water, and to offer more bread. After I was done, she brought a hot towel to wash my hands and face (another nice, upscale touch), and then brought out a dessert tray to tempt me with that night’s selection. Being fairly full, I declined the offer.
They have a full bar, and even as it filled, the restaurant was extremely quiet. Almost “I can hear their conversation four tables away” quiet. Perhaps as the night progressed and more liquor flowed, the volume went up.
A friendly staff, good food with only a couple of minor missteps, cold beer and a reasonable price. A pleasant “As advertised” experience. Oh yeah, “Lobster Madness” is now only offered on Monday and Tuesday at the Sundance Location, but can be had on Wednesdays as well at the Original and Southlake locations. It was available all three nights when I went, but has since changed.
So I recommend you make the drive and enjoy a little “Madness” yourself.
