When my husband I visit Decatur (his hometown)we never miss eating at Paul's on Water St. several times, if possible. The chili with tamales for me, chili and a cheeseburger for John. A few years ago, when staying in Decatur to help John's mother (co-owner of the Wayside)I commented to Joe how much I loved gooseberry pie (it's on their board) but they didn't have it that day. He said come back on Tuesday and there will be some. I did and there was and it was perfect. I understand that Joe didn't even feel good over the weekend, but he kept his promise. Paul's is a gem; I hope it never disappears!

I was born & raised in Decatur, and had many a bowl of chili & and cheeseburger at Paul's in the late 1960's and 1970's. The chili is the secret recipe to end all secret recipes. History has it made without any tomatoes of any kind. Don't know though. Paul's, named for Paul Delamas, also used to have homemade pie with a board on the wall showing what type of pie was available that day, by light bulbs lit next to name of pie. While there, you must have a milkshake or green river. Paul's is a Decatur Ill. landmark and needs to go to the top of the list.

The oldest place to eat in Decatur that is still in business. The original Pauls on water street is the best for memories. The 22 nd street store is the second location. The Pauls on water will still be open if the other store closes. The best shakes around. my mom Robin who runs water street makes all her own ice cream. Same as the old days. Stop in and say hi to the girls. Robin, Cindy, and Dara. (water st.) The only people i know on 22nd is Teresa, Brenda, Shelley, Andrew, Jason. The two stores are owned by my grandparents Joe and Carol Keller.
