It is with a heavy, but hopeful heart that I write this review. I have been a life-long, die-hard fan of The Original Pancake House. It was --- and, I believe one day again will be --- my all-time favorite restaurant. Every item on the menu there is top-notch --- always fresh, premium ingredients used in an inventive (Original) and satisfying manner. (My favorites are the Big Apple Supreme, the 49-ers Pancakes, the Dutch Treat (a castle of a baked-pancake surrounding a kingdom of strawberry and banana slices) and all of the amazingly fluffy omelets. The management there is great too --- they seem to really care about their guests, employees and (improving their) reputation; HOWEVER, there is a level of TOXICITY amongst an alarming percentage of The Original Pancake House Birmingham, MI EMPLOYEES that I witnessed on three out of five different occasions. You see, I very much wanted to bring my wealth of customer service leadership and brand enthusiasm to the (currently dysfunctional) team in the capacity of a Host/Server. During the application, interview, orientation and employee meeting process I was promised a thorough training and welcoming environment. During my first day, I was "thrown to the wolves" (an admittedly inept description of the kind and loyal guests) and expected to keep up. Keep up I did for the first hour and fifteen minutes. then when I asked for help I was met with UNFRIENDLINESS, INCREDULITY AND OPEN HOSTILITY by the employee cast as their head trainer. THIS ISN'T A SOUR GRAPES REVIEW. This is an attempt to make the OWNERS, MANAGERS, TEAM AND GUESTS KNOW THAT SOMETHING IS WRONG. In good conscience --- until I receive an apology from the employee in question & reasonable assurance that no other NEW EMPLOYEE will be put through what I was --- I won't be able to enjoy my favorite restaurant. I won't contribute revenue to an establishment I cannot holistically believe in. I hope other regular and potential guests take this into account when deciding where to spend their dining dollars and time. Toast, also in Birmingham, might be a better choice... (The ever-present "Accepting Applications" sign should have been a warning.) Sincerely, Peter M. Spencer
