Top Reviews of Brenda's Frozen Custard

I just love Brenda's Frozen Custard.. I have the chocolate with melted peanut butter poured over it.. Some think it is too pricey.. but it is as good as it gets. Her pulled pork is the best !!!

Basically... Brenda's is delicious.

It is a little pricey compared to other soup/sandwich and ice cream stops in the area, but honestly, Brenda (the owner) is extremely selective when it comes to ingredients and only serves the best... which costs a little more.

The pulled pork BBQ sandwich is the most popular (the sauce they use is unbelievably good).
I love the Chicago-style hot dog (they get it RIGHT, right down to the celery salt-- best in the area) and the Italian beef. The chicken salad sandwich is great toasted. Most of the soups I've had there are great.

The custard is the real treat.
Brenda makes it herself, right in the restaurant, several times a day, and refuses to serve anything but the freshest custard. Chocolate and Vanilla flavors are served daily, along with a third flavor that changes each day (I believe calendars of the flavors are available in the restaurant). Butter pecan is my favorite. You can get shakes and floats and all kind of things, but I usually just get a dish of either chocolate or vanilla with pecans on top (she gets the pecans fresh roasted- delicious!) or just the daily flavor plain. The custard is amazingly rich and doesn't need anything more.

You can get tubs of the custard to take home as well, and they usually have the last week or so's daily flavors available; though I will say.... as a former employee, I would recommend getting the fresh made custard to eat right then. Custard isn't the same after it's been put in the freezer.

Essentially, the custard comes out of the maker and goes into a tub in a open-topped freezer; after about five or six hours, it starts to get a little harder (more the texture of ice cream); at this point, the employees will scoop all the custard into the smaller tubs and put in the back freezer ready to be sold as take-home custard. Then they make more fresh custard to serve to the customers. There's nothing wrong with this (most places will just serve the same stuff until they run out, meaning you aren't necessarily getting the freshest custard, and you can tell it in the harder, less-creamy texture and the slightly blander, less-rich flavor), it's just not as good as fresh.

SO, if you're going to get a tub of custard to take home, look at the calendar and choose a flavor that has been made recently (in the last three or four days). If you want one of today's flavors and it's not too busy when you go in, ask them to scoop the custard for you right out of the "fresh-made" tubs.
