Review for Drago’s

The very first time I went to Drago’s (in Metairie), my husband and I went with a large group of his clients. I was going to get lobster. Because I have never cared for oysters, I told him not to order any for me. Imagine my dismay when a dozen were set before me!

My husband told me to try one, and if I didn’t like it, he would eat mine. I reluctantly put one in my mouth. He
asked me how I liked them, and I said “touch my oysters, and I will stab you with my fork!”

I have introduced many of my friends and relatives to these wonderful oysters. Most of them, like me, thought they didn’t like oysters. My children, who are somewhat “picky” love them as well.

My daughter is a cancer survivor (PT L!), and we drive from Baton Rouge to Memphis for her annual checkup at St. Jude. Last year, looking for a different place to eat, I found that Drago‘s was now open in Jackson, Mississippi.

As we were walking in, I told her that there was no possible way the oysters could be as good as the ones from New Orleans. Much to our surprise, they were!

When we were done, I shared our concerns and our complete satisfaction with the manager.

As we were leaving, the manager “chased“ us down and gave us two $25 gift certificates for the next time we came to Jackson.

We stopped again July 31, 2018. As usual, everything was wonderful. They have Coke Zero, which is almost impossible to find in other restaurants. Our gift certificates had expired (I didn’t even see the expiration date) and our server informed us that they were useless.

I asked for the manager and explained to her what was going on, including my part, and asked if she could honor them anyway, and they did!!!!

I’ve been reading some negative reviews on which I would like to comment.

1. Food Quality: I never order anything other than the oysters, so can’t comment on other food.

But, with a restaurant that advertises itself as “The Home of the Original Charbroiled Oysters,” and lists it FIRST on the menu, why would you eat anything else???

2. Temperature in the restaurant: I find that as I get older, I am frequently cold in restaurants. Therefore, I carry a sweater with me (actually in my trunk) when I go to any restaurant.

Also, unfortunately, we have become a country where 50% of our citizens are overweight. Restaurants try to make everyone happy and we’d all rather see someone put something on than take something off. At least I do!

2. Food

a. Cold - no comment as I’ve never experienced this.

b. Not “real” New Orleans French bread. We only use Reisling French bread (from New Orleans) for our po-boys. What we had today was perfect - real to me!

3. Prices

It is almost 300 miles from the Gulf of Mexico to Jackson. And, as a general rule, oysters, and other fresh seafood, are usually more expensive than your normal restaurant fare. If you desire cheap “seafood” check out Long John Silvers or Red Lobster.

4. Service: I believe you get the service you demand. If you are unhappy, ask to speak to the manager!!!

Ask any employee, even if they have to go back to the hostess. If the manager doesn’t satisfy you, ask for another. I think they all have at least two. If you are still unhappy, leave!, and write to the main manager in Metairie.

ALL of that to say, don’t let a few bad reviews keep you away from those delicious charbroiled oysters. And if something’s wrong, speak up, leave or go to top management.
