I can't speak for the Inn as I have never stayed there. I live in Boothbay and for lunch, the Tugboat is our favored destination. The diningroom overlooks the harbor and they offer free parking in what can be a busy harbor in the summer. The food is typically good with fresh fish choices predominating, though you CAN get burgers and pizza, if you prefer. I have never eaten lobster here, so can't vouch for it, but the other seafood has been very good. Their Maine fried shrimp are the sweet, tiny creatures that are lightly battered and maintain their characteristic sweet flavor. Some places coat them with so much batter than you can't even taste the shrimp. Not so, at the Tugboat!
They used to happily do substitutions, but not anymore. I'm not sure why that is, and I know that many reviewers tell people to leave if a restaurant won't substitute for you. Perhaps this place has enough business that they don't need to bend over backwards for their customers? I'm not sure.
Salads are fresh and ample. If anything the entree is smallish, but the vegetable servings are generous. That is the direction we ALL need to move!
Their dessert menu hasn't changed in the six years we've been eating here. THAT definitely needs to change! This is my favorite part of a meal and there is no excuse for so much monotony! Bravo for offering apple crisp, a New England favorite, but try to cut the fat just a bit. Mine was swimming in fat! They serve locally made ice cream that is always good, but when is ice cream NOT good? Can you really go wrong with ice cream? The brownie sundae is a favorite, but again what's not to like about chocolate and ice cream?
Anyway, it's worth the visit for the view alone--looks out into the harbor where you can 'catch' the cruise boats as they pass by or watch the Bay Lady heel in the wind as it makes it's pass through the harbor. Burnt Island Light and the Cuckolds Lights are visible in the far distance. The Tugboats offers a classic Maine view!!
