PARTIAL LETTER TO OWNER OF ESTABLISHMENT:
We were very disappointed upon our first night after arriving to your establishment. Much to our surprise, we did not find enough supplies to fit our needs, let alone anyone who would bring a group fitting for that bunkhouse. There weren’t enough plates and silverware, cooking utensils were limited, and cleaning supplies were virtually non-existent. Our first night was uncomfortable and unclean. We found during our search for supplies many places that had not been cleaned for a very long time, obvious by the numerous cobwebs, dust mites and multiple areas of dirt and grime. Upon further examination, we realized that there was evidence of rodent infestation, judging by the disgusting amount of feces located in cupboards and drawers where supposed clean utensils were kept. There was a significant area in a closet where mold was growing. You can certainly agree that this isn’t healthy for anyone, let alone a two year old child with breathing difficulties. The following morning, our five year old daughter awoke to the surprise of a live cock roach crawling in her bed. Imagine our disappointment after paying for this unclean place to sleep.
Fortunately, we were able to contact you to get a chance to move to another location. However, you responded with the statement, “Well you are in the country.” I don’t believe anyone, whether or not they live in your area or our area (which is also considered country) of the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, would consider this appropriate. I would like to ask the Better Business Bureau their thoughts on that matter. We don’t expect this type of hospitality when camping; much less something we are paying a large amount of money for.
Regardless, we accepted the invitation to utilize the “pool” house instead, thinking that this would be better accommodations for our family. In your defense, we were told that this house wouldn’t adequately accommodate our large family. We were given permission to use supplies from the bunkhouse to add to the minimal dishes in the house. However, we were once again surprised to go to the bunkhouse and find that the doors were locked and we were unable to get the cooking necessities promised to us. Subsequently, we had to purchase utensils, plates, and cups for our large family for the entire week, an expense that we had to endure when these basic supplies should have been furnished by you. We didn’t complain about this either, not to mention the multiple times we had to vacuum up ants crawling around upstairs where our children slept, or the mounds of dirt and dust under beds and in corners of the house.
We are very understanding people, and we fully understand that you are without assistance in taking care of this large property. We cannot fathom how you could even think that we damaged or left the place that messy as to take extra time to clean. It is almost comical to believe this because of the way we found it when we arrived. Hospitality is another area that we felt was lacking. When we had issues with the bunkhouse, laundry, dishes, and other many areas, we called you to see what could be done. We felt like it really bothered you to have your GUESTS contact you, that we were interrupting your work to ask for some of these basic necessities that you advertised you had on your property. Your overall demeanor and attitude was less than accepting of a hostess and one of the reasons we will not be returning nor will we be leaving favorable recommendations for your establishment. We feel as though we were cheated out of this deposit. We take our stays very seriously and were extremely careful as to not allow any damage of any kind, let alone the dangerous situation that you put our children in with the pool, dogs, infested house, and unclean nature of the property.
It saddens us that we have to write this letter, as we traveled over 12 hours to come to your place and were very unhappy with the result. It is our hopes that you are able to keep up your business and that improvements can be made so others won’t have the unfavorable experience that we had. We do wish you well and hope that you can get some help for that beautiful property with so much potential.
