In all fairness, this review is pretty narrow in scope as to the food the Bluebird Restaurant has to offer. After hearing about how wonderful this place was for years (told to me by people born and raised here, for I am not), I figured it was time I went. So my daughter and I, on our “Cincinnati Burger Tour”, decided to make this late Saturday afternoon the day we came in to enjoy the wonder for ourselves.

We entered an empty restaurant. By empty, I mean empty. And not just empty of patrons. I mean empty of everyone. The “I fully expected to hear the muffled cries of help from the employees trapped in a walk in freezer after the hold-up”, type empty. We stood there, uncertain as to the seating protocol, for an easy three minutes. Finally I just pointed at a booth and we seated ourselves. After a couple of more minutes, a waitress appeared at the back of the restaurant, and began doing her side work. She was obviously oblivious to our presence. Four or five minutes later (we were curious how long this would go on), we were noticed. Not by the waitress, but by the cook, who at some point had walked back in, and who had alerted the young lady of our presence.

We got menus, ordered our drinks, and skimmed through the old-fashioned, on the-wall style jukebox titles attached to the wall. And then we waited some more. Couldn’t get the jukebox to work. By this time, another table had entered, and the waitress was immediately back taking their order (it appeared she knew them), laughing (the elderly couple was apparently either hilarious, or good tippers), and after putting in their order, finally got around to taking ours. We went simple. The double decker burger for both of us, with extra onions for me. Hash Browns on mine (Crisp please), Home Fries for my daughter. The wait wasn’t long, the short order cook, was, um….cooking in short order I guess. The food was OK. It was tasty enough, and was the equivalent in construction to a Frisch’s Big Boy, or a Big Mac. Two 8-1 well-done hamburger patties, lettuce, one slice of American cheese, pickles, mayo, on a regular bun. Heavy onions on mine, assembled in a hurry, or so it appeared. The potatoes, also OK. The Hash Browns weren’t too crispy, but they weren’t raw either. Odd thing: both burgers were speared by one of those frilly cellophane-topped wooden toothpicks, which is a touch I happen to like. However, while mine sparkled with the radiance of the yellow cellophane, my daughter’s was burnt off. I really am not sure how that happens, but it did. Oh yeah, and they each were adorned with either a greasy thumb print on the top bun, or a thumb hole poked into it. Quaint.

I wish the jukebox would have worked. My teenage daughter was rather fascinated by it, and was amazed every booth had a little one to pick your songs from. I thought it was neat. OK, a little nostalgia for me, too. By the look of the selections, these were the same songs I heard come out from them 40 years ago…Three Dog Night, Johnny Cash. I don’t know if all of them were inoperable, or if it was just ours.

I guess a lot of this place’s charm is the nostalgia for everyone who grew up near here. Going out to eat after church on Sunday, memories of hopping up to the counter and grabbing a milkshake, raising a barn, putting on a dance with Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney to save the old school house…..wait, the stories are getting pretty far out now. Sorry. Because if I were to base it on just this visit, Meh... By I would give it another “good old American Comfort Food Try”.

It’s an old-fashioned diner like I remember before every corner had a McDonald’s, a Taco Bell, or a Burger King on it. I’m glad they are still here. The Bluebird Restaurant still serves liver and onions type dishes, things you don’t see at the run of the mill chains, so bless them for that. Do I understand the nostalgia here? Yep. Just like I miss lunch at the Woolworth counter while my Mom shopped, $0.10 double scoop ice cream cones from Sav-On, and my favorite, “The 5-J’s Café”, owned by my aunt Phyllis and uncle Jake in Belt, Montana. Ah, the good old days……. “Yes. A chocolate Malted, please”, “And whatever my girl wants, my good man, the treats on me”.
