I have eaten at the Jade Fountain since I was a child. My parents always took us there for special dinners. I am now 45 and my mother and I went for dinner there tonight. There was a bunch of dirty tables with a sign that said seat yourself. We chose the one clean table in the diner area near the bar. We were brought two menus by the waiter but our table was not even set so we had no silverware. He did not bring us water. This is important because my mother always puts a couple ice cubes in her coffee to cool it down. He asked us if we wanted drinks, I requested a coke and my mother coffee. He brought me my coke (which was like water with a splash of color) and told my mother it would be a few minutes for the coffee. After several passes and 15 minutes I was getting a bit irritated. At this point he brings us soup and coffee. Again we still have no silverware. Just the soup spoons he brought with the soup. He does not pour a cup for my mother, just sets the carafe down and leaves. I go to pour her a cup and the coffee cup is dirty. I bring it up to the bar where he is doing something else and told him I am not the kind to complain but I was getting angry. He comes back a few minutes later with a clean cup but does not say anything like, I am really sorry about that or even acknowledge that we have been waiting a long time or that the dish was dirty. We are hungry and start to eat our soup. After 40 some years, for the first time, I did not eat my soup. It is normally a beautiful broth, with rice that has opened open and absorbed the broth. It almost melts in your mouth and there is usually a lot of chicken. It is a small cup but always a treat. The soup was not the same at all. It is watered down much like the soda, the rice was hard and there was not a single piece of chicken in mine. We are now over a half hour in waiting and he brings us an order of deep fried cauliflower with cheese sauce. The cauliflower was cooked in old burnt oil. All you could taste was stale and burn. The cauliflower was not cooked and was stringy. It was disgusting to be honest. I am holding out because this is my favorite place and I know the food so well. My order is always beef egg fu young, always. My mother gets sweet and sour pork with fried rice. The waiter brings us our food but I have to point out, we still have no silverware. He leaves and comes back with two forks. Just forks. My egg fu young...burnt. Not badly but burnt and I am as frustrated as I have ever been at my meal. My mother's sweet and sour pork that has always had a lovely sauce has a pinkish, from the jar look and taste and she was not pleased. This is nothing like they usually serve either. I would like to note that while we sat there, the owner, an older oriental woman was manning the cash register and regularly going in the back and screaming at people so loudly the whole place could hear her. I have always told friends that the little joints that sell all you can eat for $5.00 can't hold a candle to a place like this. I will not be back there and I will no longer recommend it to my friends. I know there was a change in ownership some time back but it is more than someone else's food. The product is cheap, watered down, the staff is poor, the place is as dirty as I have ever seen a restaurant and it is as a whole a very disappointing experience.
