My mother took us to the Tokyo Mandarin in Halls when we were kids back in the 90's. I return to Knoxville frequently and ate there with my mother just this week. are under the mistaken idea that the restaurant has new owners. The restaurant was just handed down from father to son and unfortunately still has the same tired menu as it did back in the 90's. The restaurant has not been updated in years, still tired and old looking inside and outside. The owner's are a wonderful family. The father still works in the kitchen and helps around the restaurant. His younger son and his wife are always courteous and smiling, greeting customers as they come in and leave but it is what it is. To compete with today's market and gain new customers, the restaurant needs to update the look inside and outside and add updated menu options. The prices they charge now are really close to the new Grand Buffet and Asia Cafe in Powell, TN - which has absolutely wonderful food and a wonderful selection. There are several other Asian cafe's and restaurants/buffets in the west part of Knoxville which also are in the same price range which also have more selection, are more updated and look brighter and cleaner, and have great food. Halls needs a really great Asian restaurant and the Tokyo Mandarin could absolutely fill that need - if they would venture out, even if the price goes up a little - and provide a better selection of entrees, appetizers, fruits, sushi, and deserts like other buffets. I realize that the restaurant business has taken a big hit with inflation and pay more for products and over head, but I guarantee that the parking lot would be full every day for lunch and dinner and not just the same dwindling amount of people as there is now. There are fewer and fewer cars in the parking lot and fewer and fewer people at the tables inside. The restaurant is never full anymore. Lunch time is the largest crowd - with mostly construction workers, roofers, lawn and garden, painters, and a handful of locals. With just a few updates, the place could be full to capacity from lunch though the dinner hours and people would be more than happy to pay a bit more.

Absolutely a great place. Owners are friendly and very willing to help in anyway.

We have always had great takeout Chinese food from here while in town. Have never been to the buffet or inside the restaurant but the take out was on point! !Don’t pay any attention to the racist review above from 2015.

Don't know why anyone would leave a negative review for Tokyo Mandarin in Halls. Apparently they have not eaten there lately or they are just a bunch of whiny babies who are hard to please.

The food may not be authentic Chinese regardless it is excellent plus the service is also excellent. The people who work there are extremely friendly. I am a regular customer who gets food there at least once a week.

This place was pathetic! Went in a party of three (my choice lord help me) we spooned 3 small portions of food on to our 3 plates because the food looked horrible pretty sure it was last week's leftovers! I tasted the crab Rangoon it was like it looked very much so tasteless and a little bitter! My husband took 1 bite of sweet and sour chicken and the third to our party took a bite of moogoo or whatever they were passing off to us as moogoo! We all decided it was best to go rather than ending up with food poisoning or whatever else we could end up with eating that God forsaken food! We Waited 10 mins or so for the waitress to come back and she never would so we got up and left a 10.00 on the table which in my opinion was very fair for 3 waters and 3 bites of food! The owner ran over to me and said you no likeah de fude? I tried to explain to him that the bar had very little food and the food that was there was dry and sickly looking. I tried this place for the first time tonight and hope that the health board makes a visit soon! Hands down WORSE PLACE EVER!!!

I would definitely like to Rate this on the negative! And see it shut down! Eww

If I could rate this a minus five stars I would. I don't know how anyone could rate this place for being good. Food was terrible!
Food was warm and dryed out at 5:00 pm on Saturday evening. Paid dinner price for lunch time leftovers. This was our first and LAST time at Tokyo Mandarin. This was a huge disappointment and a waste of money.
