This is the BEST seafood place in TaterTown!!!

Now I will preface this review by stating that I grew up in this area. Going out for seafood, specifically Calabash-style seafood, was a common event for my family. I've dined at many wonderful, and some not-so-wonderful, seafood restaurants throughout the region over the years. The menus are all similar as to their offerings of the types of seafood, how the plates are configured, and which sides are included. While there will be slight variations with the non-seafood menu items, otherwise they could be said to be identical. The seafood will be rolled in a lightly seasoned cornmeal flour, then deep-fried to a crispy, golden shade which locks in the juiciness. It is paired with French fries & Cole slaw. Iced sweet (almost syrupy) tea is the beverage of choice. The appetizer and the bread course are the same--big, steaming, never-ending baskets of those wonderful deep-fried golden-brown dough balls of sweetened cornmeal, those uniquely Southern crispy/crunchy delicious delights that we call the hush puppy!

One difference which is readily apparent when you taste it, which determines the quality of the food, and that is the kitchen staff. Really good places have a full-time cooking crew who have been there for years, many times led by one of the owners. Their focus is making damned fine food that keeps their customers coming back again and again. Other places have been there for decades and hire a few local teenagers to work nights in the kitchen. Adam's has a great kitchen crew and extremely high standards for the food going out to the customers!
And some restaurants have been around for several generations of customers. This means that a particular restaurant may be the only one a family ever goes to due to a host of reasons, whether or not the food is really good may not be a factor in this choice. Usually habit, or a lunch special, is enough to keep customers loyal. Many times, in a tiny town, proximity is all that is needed. Adam's Seafood hasn't been around as long as another seafood place within shouting distance, but they completely outshine it in quality, quantity, and value!

On my farm, I've hosted over 500 people from all over the US and from over 50 different countries. Whenever the visitors to my farm ask about authentic food found solely in this region, I tell them about Calabash-style seafood. I've eaten at places in the immediate are, at the beach, and in Calabash itself. And I've eaten many classic restaurants which are no longer with us. So I know good seafood! To let out-of-towners and foreign folk eat something delicious and sure to leave them with great memories, there is only one place to go.

That is Adam's Seafood out on the By-pass!
This way they can try it for themselves. First, the very friendly wait staff impresses them with our great Southern hospitality. Most have never had a waitress call them 'darling', 'honey', or 'sugar' before! Most comment on how inexpensive the menu choices are compared to places in their homes. I always recommend that they get the 'Deluxe" platter for the best selection of delectable seafoods. They are unprepared for the unending heaping baskets of hushpuppies which are brought with their glistening glasses of sweet iced tea. I do have to warn them not to fill up on those crunchy balls of scrumptiousness. Then, in what seems to be two blinks, the waitress comes out with the large tray with their plates heaped with steaming seafood goodness! Seeing their eyes widen as the individual plates are set before them piled high with shrimp, oysters, flounder, scallops, deviled crab, fries, & cole slaw! No matter how talkative the table was prior to the food being brought out, all goes silent as everyone digs into their food. You hear satisfied murmurings all around the table as seafood is devoured by everyone. Most never finish their plate as the portions are so generous. The waitress always brings containers along with the check. There's always another expression of shock at how inexpensive the meal cost especially with the amount of food provided for the price. Most will be able to have another full meal with the leftovers they bring home with them. And for those staying with me for several weeks, if given the choice of something to do, they always ask for a return trip to Adam's!
When they depart from the farm and NC, they all leave with a wonderful impression this fantastic Southern cuisine, an extremely full tummy, and lasting memories of this delightful restaurant!

So, hit Adam's when you are hungry for some extremely tasty seafood!

Gigantic portions!!!

Used to be my fave. No longer, always got scallops and shrimp or oysters were great
This last visit, how insulting, all scallops were cut in half and way less of them at that. Was all I could do to wait for others to eat and leave without speaking my mind. Shady at best to think a regular customer wouldnt notice

Absolutely love this place!!!! We go to Adam's Seafood and Steaks on our way to the beach. The food is always delicious and reasonably priced. No matter what you get it is good!!! The service is excellent. Can't wait to return:)
