05/10/2020 - Doug Jensen
When I was a kid back in the early-mid 50's, my brother Greg and I would scour the alley's behind the various retail stores in Watertown. We were looking for corrugated boxes. Ideally, the flatter type garment boxes that could be found behind Herberger's and other clothing stores whose names I have long since forgotten. Sometimes Biggie and Butch Halling would join-in. When we had gathered six or eight boxes we would go to the alley door of what was then called Sokol's Oven Gold Bakery. We would ring the buzzer and in a minute or two one of the baker's would come to the door. We'd hand him the boxes, and then wait anxiously for his return with a white paper bag filled with a 1/2 dozen or so of Sokol's ever so fine pastries. My personal favorites were the creme-filled Long John and the Elephant Ear. I remember one time...
