The restaurant is decorated with pictures from the railroad boom of Monterey, so it has a distinct historical feel. It also feels very homey. The owner talked to my family for quite a while, and we enjoyed his stories. For years, he drove a bread truck in San Fran, but now he makes the best white beans and cornbread I've EVER eaten. I'm a Southerner, so I've had my share of home cooking, but the Cup and Saucer takes the cake. Oh, did I mention the owner gave us free coconut cake?
As you sit in an old-timey booth, feel free to watch your food being prepared. The cooking area is open, and you can even sit at the counter on diner-style bar stools, if booths aren't your style.
The giant blue cup and saucer outside the restaurant is both quirky and an excellent way to know you have reached your destination. The next time I'm passing through Monterey, I'll be stopping by the Cup and Saucer.
