Top Reviews of Big Jim's Pizzeria

review_stars 08/25/2015 - Gil - from Franklin Lks, nj
Today Tuesday 8/25/2015, five retired employees of William Paterson University met for LUNCH at Big Jim's Haledon, NJ. Three out of the five women are of Italian descent and were looking for something that would satisfy our Italian tastes. All three selected the sandwich titled "Grilled Chicken with Eggplant Milanese with Fresh Melted Mozzarella Cheese" We had our choice of either an Italian Baguette or Rosemary Focaccio (we chose the Italian Baguette). It came w/ a side of Marinara Sauce and curled French fries all for the price of only $7.95. Being past employees of the University and its convenience to the facility, we had ate lunches at Big Jim's without problems. I did hear, however, that it has been under New Management. We did notice the young man who serviced us was polite, accommodating, very attentive to our needs and we were not being rushed. A fair price for a great lunch. We all agreed that our food choice receives our "Italian Seal of Approval".

I used to love their pizza slices and their subs ... recently I went and ordered 2 slices ... the guy who was fixing the phone ... trying to take it apart and put it back together took two old slices thru them in the oven ... didn't close oven door ... went back to fixing phone and one minute later took the 2 slices thru them in box and handed to me .. i put my fave toppings on it and walked to car to sit down and eat ... they were COLD and stale tasting ... besides the fact that his hands were filthy from fixing the phone ... no tongs or spatula or gloves used... and then the price it comes to like $4 and some stupid cents like 7 or 8 i HATE when they can't round off ... $4 even is more then enough considering all the chains have $8 large two topping pizzas currently ... this is their last straw. years ago it was GREAT now it sucks ... end of story ... and the place is filthy behind the counter which is in plain view when you order ...

Even-though I have moved to adjacent towns, I lived in the Big Jim (BJ) area for year and have been a extremely loyal customer for years. I remember when BJ's was built and then later renovated. It has been a great place for 30+ years. For the past 10 years I have recommended BJs way-above the good tasting but stingy and expensive "Positano" and other Wayne NJ based places. But my last few meals (I have ordered for my family) have not been even close to what i have expected from BJ's. Today, I order Bolognese over angle hair and the person taking my order didn't know that Bolognese was meat sauce; which showed up with huge chunks of meat, almost no (marinara)sauce and tasted horrible. It looked like they took a meat ball and slightly crushed it; plus other big error with my wife's and daughter's meal. Needless to say, this was my third and last time to order from BJs. Sorry But i don't know how you can make up the bad taste i have for you guys now.

Absolute shame about this once great pizzeria. I stopped in the other day, after not being there for a few years (I moved out of the area) and was surprised how terrible things where. Especially since the owners gave the outside of the restaurant a full face-lift and made it look like a fancy restaurant. The food, however, is awful. The pizza is gross, salads looked old, sauce will give you heart burn and everything coming out of the kitchen dripped with oil. The worst part wasn't even the food but rather the kitchen and pizza area looked FILTHY!! I couldn't believe how much dirt, grease and garbage I saw. Sad to say but I won't ever go back again.

I don't even want to give them a 1 star rating! I stopped in the other day during my break from classes (Currently attending William Paterson). I ordered a grilled chicken salad to go. While waiting for my order I realized the girl at the counter never asked me for what dressing I wanted, so I figured I would let her know when I got my order and she could put it in a plastic cup for me. When she called out my order she said chicken ceasar salad. So i said whatever, I don't mind chicken casear salad's, so I got that and a 20 oz diet coke. Total came to be ten dollars and change. So I drive to the college, open up my salad, and...
1. I ordered to go, but they didn't give me any napkins or a plastic fork.. Anytime I go to a restaurant and get something to go, they always give you a plastic fork and knife.. Alright whatever, my own fault, should have asked.
2. The salad consisted of lettuce, croutons, and it was DRENCHED with the worst caesar salad dressing I have ever tasted.. NO CHICKEN! I paid over ten dollars for a 20 oz diet coke and some lettuce with crappy dressing. Needless to say I was pissed. I sat in my car, picking the lettuce up with my fingers trying to salvage my lunch.
Will never go there again. Service was awful. Food was awful. I feel like I got ripped off.

For years, we used to order from here, but in the past year, the food has been horrible. I don't know if its just take out, I would hope that if you dine in the food isn't as bad. The eggplant parm was uneatable, had to throw it away. GREASY GREASY GREASY and old grease to boot. Smelled terrible, looked terrible. A chicken salad ordered was dry and also smelled strange. Panini with grilled marinated eggplant and grilled chicken, again so greasy the bread leaked oil. Why I have no idea since everything was supposed to be grilled. I don't know who does the cooking for them now, but will never order from there again. A shame, because they used to be good.
