Great, day or night.

On the map, Assado is only a short distance from the Portuguese neighborhood of Newark’s Ironbound, but food-wise it couldn’t be farther from the cuisine of that neighborhood!

Across the board, disappointment was the experience of a dinner there recently. Garlic shrimp, a staple appetizer was bland, lacking the traditional garlicky, lemony flavor one expects. Like one of the other reviewers, the porterhouse I ordered was a poor quality of meat. Tough and chewy to the point that it was unpleasant to eat and a was way overpriced!

My party was equally disappointed with the bacalao and shrimp entrees ordered. They even neglected to serve the traditional rice, vegetables and “potato chip” fries with the entrees. Even the flan dessert was disappointing!

Maybe this kind of food is acceptable in Livingston, but with so many better restaurants a few miles away in Newark’s Ironbound neighborhood, why settle for so much less?
