My retired mom was excited to take me to what she had heard to be the best restaurant food and experience in the Southport array of culinary opportunities. I was beyond optimistic as I read the menu before committing, as well as the ambiance of the facility. Now:
We were there before any rush of patrons, 5:45.
We departed around 7:00, the restaurant had filled.
Our service was the same level of attentiveness the entire time, rushed and disengaged.
As the "server" read the specials the "ying and yang" soup sounded great, a tomoato bisque on one side and mushroom on the other. I was excited. Ordered, delivered and Bland and Boring.
We did purcahse the wine special of the evening and that was great. It also helped us get through the rest of the evening.
I ordered the Bouillabaisse and mother the Beer Battered Shrimp.
Shrimp, greasy and tough. Could actually twist the paper they were served on and produce drops of grease. They were so tough they actually tugged a tooth implant out onto the floor. I kid you not!
Mine did not have the rich, depthness of flavor of previous similar dishes I have had AND the shrimp were tough.
Every dish did nothing on the palette, just laid there. Well if you count the grease, laid then slid.
BTW, we had to ask from bread after the entrees were served and YES we were charged for it even.
While dishes like this are enough to write the place off, based on the other items on the menu I would have been willing to give it another chance. However, when I informed our server of our "feelings", she responded in a rushed and put off manner:
We have a new assistant chef. they are all rushing around to get orders out, do you want me to credit the dish off, please tell me though, was your service okay?
I then gave the manager the same feedback when leaving. He was busy writing on some pad. I said excuse me, and waited for him to disengage. When he did and I shared my feelings, he said, sorry that you didn't like what can I do for you?
Restaurants are either in the great food business or the great experience business. Some we as patrons are lucky when we find the ones that are in both. This one is in not one of these.
Tell you what even, we had had lunch in downtown Wilmington at this very casual seafood restaurant, Dock Street Oyster Bar. Everything aspect was there and the Pharmacy should be embarrassed to consider itself upscale compared to the wonderful food and service we had from this extremely not pretentious establishment. Just to confirm, I and my family have enjoyed evenings in some of the best reastaurants around the United States and I just gave a higher rating to a significant different offering.
Don't waste your time with the feeling, "oh what a nice looking place and interesting menu", go spend your $100 for two somewhere else.

Great Restaurant. Love the curry chicken soup, the crabcakes and all the desserts!
