Having lived in Malaysia for several years, lately I was feeling homesick for the food. We found Banana Island, and I had decided we would try several dishes so my husband could get a feel for the cuisine. We ordered Roti Canai as appetizers, then Robert tried the Banana Island Special Fried Rice while I ordered the Char Kuay Teow. The Roti Canai is a flaky pancake/bread served with a mild curry for dipping... and the Char Kuay Teow is fried flat rice noodles with your choice of meat with bean sprouts. The Fried rice had vegetables, choice of meat, and a mild but but flavorful seasoning. I loved the food as it was indeed authentic to what I remembered - it wasn't Americanized! :).
We enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. We needed boxes as the portions were very generous! Our server was very helpful and made sure we had what we needed and felt welcome.
My husband isn't a world traveler or too adventurous in food, yet he said the fried rice here at Banana Island was much BETTER than the usual Chinese fried rice he likes so much! THAT is saying a lot! I was happy to have some authentic food which was very common in Malaysian homes and in restaurants there - remaining true to the flavor! The prices are reasonable for the quality and quantity of the food. Yes, we will go back again!
