Weird and tense... I've bussed, served, and tended bar for six total years and never would've handled paying-customers (or nonpaying passers thru, for that matter) this way:
Around a month ago, I walked into M Street Diner behind two guys who were ordering together so I was looking at the specials and pictures of their food on the wall near the register. Bright, clean, nice looking homey little diner. The guy at the counter greets everyone and starts taking a customer's order while an older man, probably the manager with salt & pepper hair and a gut, emerges from behind a curtain separating us from what looked like the kitchen. The older man cuts in to tell the customer they can't serve what he wants because they're closing soon and they're cleaning up for the day and business is this, that, and the other... The two customers apologized, having not realized the place was closing soon - quarter to three, middle of the day. So quickly, the front counter guy tries to confirm with the "manager" the available dishes and is told (about scoldingly) that the oven and other things are shut down. The two customers say they could come back another time earlier (yeah, maybe) so the "manager" says they can make breakfast items on the grill. During it all, there's a cook visible thru a serving window, like waiting to cook or continue cleaning. The two customers look again at the menus and "Counter Guy" tells them breakfast is served till closing and suggests another menu item as well. He's told by "Manager Guy" the item is not actually available. "Counter Guy", politely and awkwardly, offers to let "Manager Guy" take the order since he knows what's available. "Manager Guy" steps up to take the order and one of the customers says he'll just have the pancakes with bacon and is told they don't make pancakes for lunch. Customer asks what they do have available and "Manager Guy" actually asks him, "Well, what do you want?" as if he's the one enduring the imposition here. At that point, I was almost offended by "Manager Guy's" brash attitude so I didn't want to deal with placing an order thru him and I left. I felt the older employee had no interest in helping customers, presenting the quality of his products to build & support a positive reputation, or making sales for the business, but instead just wanted to go home - early. I felt bad for the customers and the seemingly subordinate "counter guy" who all endured that unprofessional misuse of the customer's time. I'm not sure exactly who does what there but my impression of their chain of command is like this: I hope the owner finds out how his manager is handling customer contact situations and keeps him only doing whatever else he's supposed to do and only lets the front counter staff deal with customers. Their bank account is $10 lighter for that day and every day since, that I've walked by there with an appetite.
