When we arrived at the restaurant there was no host present at the front station. Not a big deal so we waited. When the host finally arrived, he was rude and acted as he was doing us some huge favor by seating us. As we sat at the table waiting for the server we noticed that there was a basketball game being shown at the bar so we decided to move just as the server came over. She openly complained about our decision to move. Not exactly the professional demeanor one would expect. Once we got settled at the bar it didn’t take long to realize that the bartender was slow and incompetent. The drinks took just over fifteen minutes to arrive and my Manhattan was screwed up. The restaurant wasn’t busy and they were clearly overstaffed at the moment so there appeared to be little reason for the delay. He had made an ingredient substitution, of squeezed orange for bitters, without even checking to see if it was okay or ask if we might want to order something else instead since they were out of bitters. The food was served quickly and overall quality was fine, mediocre as to be expected given the kind of high-end mall food they strive to be. Our payment was in the form of gift cards that were a holiday present. The bartender took the cards and twenty dollars cash, since we wanted change for a tip, without even asking how we wanted to pay. We were given back twenty dollars in change with no word as to what happened to the gift cards. We asked the bartender what happened to the cards and he had no information on the twelve dollar balance we had on the last gift card. The bartender called someone over, that I can only assume was a poorly dressed manager that assumed we were drunk. He basically told us we were out the twelve dollars due to the nature of the gift cards but assured us that the bartender would get the balance as the tip. At that point we just left. It wasn’t worth our time or energy to pursue the matter with someone that clearly didn’t have a grasp of customer service. This was a unique first impression to a lackluster food chain that is a sad wart on the Portland Pearl District and I can’t wait for the day when I see their space vacant with a “For Lease” sign on it. DON’T EAT HERE.
