The week before Christmas and my wife & I were spending 7 days in San Francisco for our anniversary. Staying at a B&B(The Inn San Francisco- also very good!) in the Mission. We were wandering down Valencia, hungry, about 8PM, cold night, ready to eat at whatever place looked good in what we believe is one of the great restaurant towns in the world. We found a gem with La Traviata that backs up that claim! This small cozy spot made me think of Hemingway's short story A Clean Well Lighted Place. I wanted to see what they could do with the the basics of fresh tomatoes, mushrooms and EVO that the menu said was the pasta Ai Funghi and my wife had the pasta Carbonara because she thinks that panchetta is one of nature's gifts. Both were perfectly al dente. The waiter was a perfect host. Wonder if his family are the owners. He seemed to have that pride in what he was doing. Italian salads and soups can be had for under $10 but we had more than enough with just our entrees. Online guide had the $$$ rating but most all their dishes were between $10-$16. La Traviata is a wonderful place on Valencia which has a lot of them. Check it out.
