I finally had a chance to try this place and was amazed. I have spent some years in Thailand on a job and after I came back to Vancouver found that the plethora of Thai restaurants really do not serve genuine Thai food. Maybe it says something about the culinary knowledge of Vancouverites or something. All the Thai restaurants I have been to offer food that does not taste or look Thai. It is almost like it is Chinese food dressed up to look Thai with some spices from Thailand. Talay Thai is completely different. It is the real thing. The food has the real, solid taste I used to experience in Thailand, highly savoury with thick flavours. The Tom Yum Kung is made with lots of coconut milk and not thickened with corn starch like the other Thai restaurants. Talay's phat thai is made with real tamarind and not ketchup. Moreover, they have dishes I have never seen in other Thai restaurants which I really love... like Yentafore and Khai Yat Sai, which is a true omlette Thai style. And the dinner portions are really a good size, in fact enough for two if you eat rice with the meal. Compared to the other Thai restaurants it is cheaper. The staff are really nice and treat you in a personal manner, diligently attending to all your wishes. If you want to modify a food item or even order something that is not on the menu it is no problem. The curries are to die for. Again lots of coconut milk and no corn starch. The ambience is nice, cozy, clean and feels like being in my Thai friends' home. I just love the artwork on their menus, too. Definitely a place I will visit regularly and take friends and family.
