We were very lucky and honored to have our pre-wedding dinner at Schera's for our immediate family. On their patio with outdoor seating, they helped us to set up the table with some decorations we had brought. During our family-style meal, the waiter explained what each of the dishes were, their main ingredients, and their cultural significance. Each of the dishes were amazing, with my favorite being the shakshuka. Towards the end of the meal, the chef came outside to explain the story behind the dessert that he had prepared for us. The chef, like us, is part of a multicultural family, and prepared a traditional Algerian dish which symbolizes the merging of two families. All in all, it was a truly wonderful meal with amazing hospitality and with some great views. Highly recommend!

The American food selections at Schera's are good, but the real gems on the menu are the Algerian dishes. The co-owner, Frederique Boudouani, is justly proud of his Algerian heritage and likewise the pride he takes in building good relations between Algeria and his adopted home, Elkader, Iowa--named for the great Algerian patriot and humanitarian, Abd el-Kader. Algerian cooking blends North African and Southern French cuisines in subtle, tantalizing, and delightful ways. Be sure to ask about the Algerian specials when your server brings the menus.
In warm weather Schera's also features one of northeast Iowa's best outdoor dining views, from its terrace overlooking the Turkey River and Elkader's keystone arch bridge (1889) and red brick, "coffee mill style" courthouse (1867).
Schera's offers a good selection of non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages, including craft and artisanal beers and ales.
